Can you record the front and back camera at different resolutions on iPhone?
Short answer: no, not in DualCam. Both cameras run at one shared capture setting — 720p or 1080p — rather than a resolution you pick separately for each. That is not a missing feature so much as a direct consequence of how a multi-camera session on iPhone is allowed to be configured in the first place.
The more useful question is what actually happens if the two halves of a dual recording end up looking uneven, and what to do about it instead. That comes down to three things: why the setting is shared, what an uneven capture resolution would actually look like once it reaches the frame, and the control that does let you put more detail on one side.
Why one shared setting, not two independent ones
A multi-camera session has rules a normal, single-camera session does not. Every camera running inside it must use a format explicitly flagged as multi-cam-capable, and the combined cost of every input in the session has to fit inside one hardware budget — a budget that belongs to the session as a whole, not to each camera separately. That last part is the reason an uneven split is not a reliable lever even where it is technically possible: dropping one camera to a lower format does not predictably free up enough headroom to raise the other, because the number that actually decides what fits is the combined one, not either camera on its own.
Exposing two independent resolution pickers would mean some combinations work on one iPhone and silently fail on another, with nothing on a spec sheet to tell you which. In picture-in-picture, the inset window is already a small area of the canvas that the source frame gets sampled down into, so a capture-resolution gap between the two cameras would mostly disappear into that downsampling anyway — the inset was never going to show full source detail regardless. Split screen is the layout where a gap would actually show, because both halves occupy equal-sized regions of the same canvas. Put a materially softer source into one of two equal frames sitting side by side, and that is exactly the comparison a viewer’s eye makes without needing to be told to look for it.
The lever you actually have
Since resolution is shared, there are two things that genuinely change the balance between the two halves of a dual recording, and neither of them is a per-camera resolution setting. The first is the shared capture setting itself: raising it from 720p to 1080p benefits both cameras equally, so it is worth doing whenever the take, the heat and the free space allow it. The second is layout. In picture-in-picture, the full-frame camera keeps its whole image while the inset gives some of it up to fit a corner of the screen — that is an unequal split of detail by design, and DualCam lets you swap which camera holds the full-frame role mid-recording. Does the front camera capture at a lower resolution than the back camera by default?
No. Both cameras run the same capture setting — 720p or 1080p — whichever you selected. Any softness you notice in a picture-in-picture inset comes from that window being a small, downsampled area of the canvas, not from the front camera capturing less detail.
If I record at 720p, does that also limit the full-frame camera in picture-in-picture?
Yes. The capture setting applies to both cameras equally, including whichever one is currently filling the frame. There is no separate high-resolution mode reserved for the full-frame role.
Would recording at 1080p make split-screen halves match better?
They already match, because both halves are drawn from the same shared capture setting.
