Can you use an external camera for dual camera recording on iPhone?

No. DualCam's lens picker chooses among the back lenses your own iPhone has — ultra wide, wide or telephoto — and there is no entry in it, or anywhere else in the app, for a camera that is not built into the phone. A USB-C webcam, an action camera routed through a capture card, a drone's live feed: none of them can become one of the two live slots in the composited frame.

That is worth explaining rather than just stating, because "external camera" covers a few genuinely different things, and the reasons it does not work are different for each one. Some of them are close to working in a way that is easy to assume solves this; none of them actually do.

What a multi-camera session is actually pairing

Dual recording exists at all because the iPhone can run an AVCaptureMultiCamSession — a single capture session that reads two cameras at once, on the same chip, sharing one hardware budget. DualCam opens that session with exactly two inputs: the front TrueDepth camera and one of the back lenses your phone has. The lens picker lets you choose which back lens feeds that session — ultra wide, wide or telephoto, depending on what your iPhone has — but every option in that list is still a lens built into the phone.

That is the whole feature. The session was designed to pair the phone's own front and back cameras, which already share timing, exposure independence and a thermal and bandwidth budget by virtue of sitting in the same device. There was never a third slot in that design for a camera that lives outside the phone, because the thing being solved — get both of the phone's own cameras into one frame, live — does not need one.

Why an accessory camera does not just slot in

iOS does support some outside cameras. A USB-C webcam that speaks the standard UVC protocol can plug directly into a modern iPhone and be picked up as a camera source — that has been true since iOS 17. But it shows up to an app as its own, independent single-camera source, entirely separate from the multi-camera session that pairs the phone's own front and back lenses. An app would have to be built specifically to take frames from two unrelated pipelines — the iPhone's own multi-cam session, and a UVC accessory's own feed — and mix them together in the same shader pass. That is a different feature from compositing two cameras that were already designed to run together inside one session, and it is not the feature DualCam offers.

Wireless accessories sit further away still. An action camera or a drone does not present itself to iOS as a camera at all — its footage exists as its own file, recorded on its own device, on its own timeline. Getting that footage next to anything from the iPhone means moving a file across afterwards, which puts you back in the position of reconciling two separate recordings in an editor — the exact thing a live composite is meant to skip.

What actually gets you closer to what people are usually after

Most requests for an external camera turn out to be a request for a different field of view or a different look on the back shot, and both of those are already reachable without leaving the built-in cameras. If the goal is a wider back shot — the reason people reach for an action camera in the first place — the lens picker's ultra wide option covers a lot of that ground on any iPhone that has one, with no accessory and no extra pipeline to manage.

If the goal is a specific optical character an add-on gives you — a fisheye curve, a macro close focus — a clip-on lens is the one piece of outside hardware that genuinely does integrate, and for a telling reason: it never presents itself to iOS as a camera at all. It is glass sitting in front of a lens the phone already knows, so the multi-camera check never sees it and never has an opinion about it. The trade-offs that come with a clip-on — alignment, shadowing a neighbouring lens — are real, but they are a framing problem, not a compatibility one.

If what you actually want is two independent, professionally shot feeds — a real action camera's footage plus a phone pointed at your own face, each graded and reframed on its own terms — that is a legitimate goal, but it is the two-devices-then-edit workflow, not a single-file live composite. Deciding that on purpose, knowing you are choosing two files to reconcile afterwards in exchange for two feeds with no shared constraints, is a different decision from assuming an external camera can simply be plugged into a dual recording.

  • Want a specific optical look on the back lens: a clip-on lens integrates, because it is optics, not a camera source.

  • Want two truly independent, separately gradable feeds: that is a two-device shoot you edit together afterwards, not a live dual recording.

Common follow-up questions

Does the picture-in-picture or split-screen layout at least accept a photo or a pre-recorded clip instead of a live camera?

No. Both halves of the composite are live camera feeds from the iPhone, read and drawn in real time. Nothing pre-recorded, and nothing from outside the phone, gets composited in alongside them.

If iOS can use a USB-C webcam for video calls, why can't a dual-camera app use one too?

A USB-C webcam shows up as its own separate, single-camera source, not as an extra lens inside the multi-camera session that pairs the iPhone's own front and back cameras. Reading from both at once, in the same frame, is a different feature from either one on its own — and it is not the one this kind of app builds.

Is filming a TV or monitor with the back camera the same thing as using an external camera?
