Does AirPlay or screen mirroring stop dual camera recording on iPhone?
Short answer: no. Mirroring the iPhone’s screen to a TV, a monitor or an Apple TV over AirPlay — or over a cable to an external display — does not touch a dual-camera recording in progress, because it is a different kind of system feature from the ones that do. A phone call, another app taking the foreground, or a Mac claiming the camera through Continuity Camera all interrupt a recording because iOS hands the camera to whichever process is asking for it, one caller at a time. Why mirroring is not in the same category as a phone call or another app

Answering a call hands the screen to the Phone app. Opening Messages or swiping to the App Switcher hands it to whatever you land on. In every one of those cases, something else becomes the thing iOS is serving, and DualCam loses the camera because it is no longer that thing.
AirPlay screen mirroring does not make that request. It is a display feature, not a camera feature: it takes a copy of whatever the screen is currently showing and sends it to a television or a monitor, over Wi-Fi or a cable, so a second audience can watch along. What shows up on the TV, and what actually gets written to the file
The two camera images you see while recording are the exact frame DualCam composites and writes to the video file — that is true whether you are mirroring or not. Turning on AirPlay does not create a second, different feed for the TV; it duplicates the same screen, which means whoever is watching on the mirrored display is seeing the same shot, in the same layout, that ends up in your finished video.
What they are also seeing is everything else on the phone’s screen: the record button, the layout switcher, the filter row, a low-battery indicator, any notification banner that happens to land while you are shooting. None of that interface is part of the composited canvas DualCam writes to disk — the file only ever contains the two camera images, nothing drawn around them — but it is very much part of what a mirrored screen shows a room. If you are demonstrating something on a classroom TV or walking a small group through footage as you shoot it, that is usually fine. If you specifically do not want an audience seeing your on-screen controls, mirroring the recording live is not the way to show them a clean shot; the finished file, played back afterwards, is.
The one real cost: it adds to the same thermal budget as everything else
A dual-camera recording is already asking a lot of the phone — two live capture pipelines, a GPU composite on every frame, a hardware encode of the result. Mirroring the screen adds one more ongoing job on top of that: encoding the display output and pushing it out over Wi-Fi or a cable, continuously, for as long as the mirror is active. It is a smaller job than the camera pipeline, but it is not free, and on a phone that is already running warm it is one more thing generating heat rather than shedding it.
iOS reacts to the device’s thermal state in steps, regardless of what caused it. At the “serious” level, a 1080p recording that has not yet started gets dropped to 720p before it begins; one already in progress gets a warning instead. Why this is not the same thing as livestreaming
It is easy to see “my dual-camera video is now showing on a TV” and assume the next step, streaming it to the internet, is just as close. It is not. AirPlay mirroring is a local feature — the phone finds a receiver on the same Wi-Fi network, or is connected by a cable, and sends the screen to that one nearby device. Nothing is uploaded anywhere, and no one outside the room can watch. Livestreaming to an audience elsewhere is a different technical job — encoding video fast enough to push it out over the internet in real time, and handling a network connection that can stall or drop — and it is not something a mirrored display does or was built to do. If broadcasting to people who are not in the room is the actual goal, that calls for a purpose-built streaming setup, not a TV mirroring the phone.
Setting it up without losing the moment
- Connect and confirm the mirror before you start recording, not after — the small delay of finding a receiver or picking a cable adapter is much cheaper before you press record than in the middle of a take.
- Wired and wireless behave the same way here: a cable to an external display and AirPlay to an Apple TV or AirPlay-enabled TV are both display features, so neither touches the camera any differently than the other.
- If the take is long or the room is warm, treat mirroring the same way you would treat a thick case or a hot day — a reasonable reason to choose 720p over 1080p, since it is one more small load off the same thermal budget.
- A short mirroring delay between the phone and the TV is normal and only affects what the room sees a moment later; it has no effect on the file itself, which is written from the local composite in real time.
