Does dual camera video support spatial video on iPhone?

No. Spatial video and dual camera recording sound like they might be the same idea — “more than one camera view captured at once” — but they solve two different problems with two different pairs of lenses, and neither can be reached from inside the other’s session.

Spatial video pairs two of the back cameras against each other to reconstruct depth for playback in a headset. Dual camera recording pairs the front camera against a back one to capture two different subjects in a single flat frame you can post anywhere. Both use more than one lens on the same iPhone at once; that is roughly where the resemblance ends.

What spatial video is actually capturing

Spatial video runs two of the iPhone’s own back lenses at the same time — the main and ultra-wide cameras, a few millimetres apart on the back of the phone — pointed at the same scene from two slightly different positions. That small offset is the whole point: it mirrors the gap between your own two eyes, which is how any stereo system reconstructs a sense of depth. The two nearly identical takes are stored together as a stereo pair, not merged into one frame, inside a container built to hold both.

Play that file back through a headset with a separate screen for each eye, and the two views reassemble into a sense of depth in the original scene. Play the same file on an ordinary screen and it behaves like a normal flat video — the second viewpoint is simply along for the ride, unused.

A different pair of lenses, pointed at different things

Dual camera recording is not a stereo pair. DualCam runs the front camera and one back lens at once, and they are almost never aimed at the same subject — one is you, the other is whatever you are showing. There is no shared scene and no small offset to reconstruct anything from; the two feeds are drawn into one canvas on the GPU as you record, composited into a single ordinary 2D frame the instant they are captured. That composite — not two separate eye views — is the exact frame written to the file.

A stereo pair needs two lenses looking at the same thing from two nearby positions. A dual-camera composite needs two lenses looking at two different things, drawn into one picture. Those are opposite jobs; no session runs both at once.

The orientation and the budget both say no a second time

Spatial video is captured holding the phone sideways, in landscape, because that is the orientation in which the main and ultra-wide lenses sit side by side the way two eyes do. DualCam’s session runs the other way around: portrait only, the orientation that puts the front camera on you and the back camera on whatever you are pointing at, which is the layout a front-and-back composite actually needs.

Even setting orientation aside, a multi-camera session has one hardware budget to spend, and dual camera recording already spends the whole thing on the front camera and one back lens: every camera in the session has to run a format explicitly marked multi-cam capable, and the combined cost of both feeds, the compositing pass and the encode all have to fit inside one ceiling. That ceiling is the same reason resolution tops out at 1080p rather than reaching for 4K. Adding a second back lens for a stereo pair, on top of the front camera the session is already running, asks for three simultaneous streams instead of two — further past that ceiling, not closer to it.

What a dual-camera file gives you instead

What you get from dual camera recording is not a smaller spatial video — it is a different kind of file on purpose, built to be watched anywhere rather than through a headset. A composited 2D file plays instantly on any screen and uploads to any platform, because it was never captured as two eye views in the first place. Spatial video buys a sense of depth for one specific playback path; dual camera recording buys two subjects landing in one frame, playable everywhere, immediately.

If a stereo, headset-ready recording is specifically what you are after, that is the stock Camera app’s job, on an iPhone whose hardware supports it — a different session, a different lens pair and a different file than compositing the front and back cameras together.

Could a future update add spatial capture to dual camera video?

Not as a toggle inside the same session. Spatial video needs two back lenses recording one shared subject as a stereo pair, held in landscape; dual camera recording needs the front and back camera pointed at two different subjects, held in portrait. They draw on overlapping hardware for opposite jobs — it is a different session, not a missing setting.

Can a dual-camera recording be converted into a spatial video afterward?

No. A composited dual-camera file is an ordinary flat MP4 — one frame per moment, not two eye views — so there is no second viewpoint hiding in it to reconstruct depth from, because only one was ever captured.

Does dual camera video play normally on a Vision Pro headset?

Yes, the same way it plays on any other screen. You get an ordinary flat picture rather than a stereo one, because a flat picture is what was recorded.
