How to film a concert or live event with both iPhone cameras
A concert or a game is the same idea as a reaction video — the thing happening and your face watching it, landing in one frame instead of two clips you would have to sync afterwards — pointed at something you cannot ask to happen again. There is no reshoot of an encore or a last-minute goal, so the framing and the settings need to already be right by the time it happens, not fixed afterwards.
It is also a different physical shoot than a mounted vlog or a tripod interview. The phone is in your hand for the length of the show, not resting on a dashboard, the crowd around you is part of the soundtrack whether you want it or not, and the event runs for hours while any single take you actually want to keep runs a few minutes at most.
Stage or field big, you small
Picture-in-picture is the layout for this: the performance or the game fills the frame, and your face floats in a corner reacting to it. That is the same logic that makes it the default for driving or courtside shooting generally — the changing wide scene earns the resolution, and your reaction only needs a small window, not equal space with the stage.
Which corner to use depends on where your arm naturally sits when you hold the phone up and on what is actually in the bottom of the frame — a phone screen glowing in someone’s hand in front of you, a barrier, a scoreboard. A phone held up for three hours does not work — shoot takes, not one recording
There is no pause button in the middle of a dual-camera recording — a video file is written continuously from the moment it opens, so stopping and starting again is the only way to break up a shoot, and that turns out to suit a live event better than it sounds. Nobody’s arm holds a phone steady overhead for a whole set, and nothing worth keeping happens for most of the runtime anyway.
Decide in advance which moments you actually want: the opening song, the goal, the encore, the bit you know you will want to rewatch. Record those as their own short takes and put the phone down in between. Shorter takes also mean the phone gets a break between them, which matters here as much as anywhere — two camera pipelines and a live GPU composite are heavy work, and a long unbroken take is what pushes a phone toward the point where the system ends the recording on its own.
The microphone hears the whole crowd, not just the stage
A dual recording carries one audio track, not one per camera, and that track is whatever the phone’s microphone actually picks up in the room — the PA system, the people singing next to you, your own voice, all mixed together at whatever balance the venue gives you. There is no way to isolate the stage from the crowd after the fact; the recording captures the experience of being there, not a clean feed of the performance.
For most live-event footage that is exactly what makes it watchable back later — the noise around you is part of what it felt like to be in the room. If you specifically want a narration track without the venue behind it, mute has to be turned on before you press record, since the audio track either exists from the first frame or does not exist at all; you would then add commentary or music afterwards rather than relying on what the phone picked up live.
Battery and heat across a whole show
Two camera pipelines, a GPU composite running on every frame, and a hardware encoder already ask more of the battery than a normal recording, and a live event adds hours of standing around between takes with the screen on to check angles. None of that is a reason to worry about any single clip, but across a whole night it adds up, so treat an intermission or a break between sets as the time to top up the phone rather than trying to charge while a take is running — charging generates its own heat on top of what recording already produces.
Turning the screen brightness down between takes helps more than it seems like it would, since the display draws power on its own regardless of what the cameras are doing, and a bright screen at a dark venue is rarely something anyone but you is looking at.
Zoom is capped by the lens you picked before you started
Pinch-to-zoom works during a take, but it only gets you closer within whichever back lens is currently active — it will not carry you across to a different physical lens the way it does in the stock Camera app. If your seat is far from the stage or the field, a telephoto lens, where your iPhone has one, gets you meaningfully closer before you are just cropping and enlarging the same image digitally.
Lens choice is one of the settings that locks once you start recording, alongside resolution, so pick it before the first take rather than planning to switch it mid-show. If you are not sure how far you will end up from the action, decide based on your seat or your usual spot, not the front row you are hoping for.
Common follow-up questions
Can I just record the whole show in one file?
You could try, but heat and battery make several hours of continuous dual recording impractical, and there is no pause button to bank moments across a break in between. A handful of short takes around the parts you actually want works better and gives you separate clips to choose from afterwards, instead of one long file to scrub through.
Will the venue noise ruin the audio?
There is no way to separate your voice from the room — one microphone feeds one track, and at a live event that means the PA and the crowd are in it along with you. That is usually part of what makes the footage feel real; mute before you start recording only if you specifically want a clean track to add commentary or music to later.
Can I switch to a longer lens mid-recording if I end up far from the stage?
No. Back-lens choice locks the moment recording starts, the same as resolution. Pick a telephoto lens beforehand if your seat is far away and your iPhone has one; pinch-to-zoom still works within whichever lens you chose, just without crossing to another one.
