How to film a driving vlog with both iPhone cameras
A driving vlog is really two shots that only work together: the road ahead, and the reaction to it. Point the back camera through the windshield, keep your face in a small window in the corner, and the commentary lines up with whatever is actually happening outside — a merge, a wrong turn, a good song coming on — without a single cut. Recording both cameras at once turns that into one file instead of two clips you would otherwise have to sync by ear afterwards.
What makes this shot different from a reaction video or a walking vlog is that the phone is mounted, not held, and it is mounted somewhere hot, next to a windshield, often plugged into a charger for the length of the trip. The framing advice is the easy part. Getting a mount, a heat source and a microphone to cooperate for twenty minutes of driving is the part worth planning before you pull out of the driveway.
A phone mount built for maps is the wrong shape
Most car mounts on the market are built for looking at a map, which means they hold the phone landscape, at eye height, tilted toward the driver. Road big, you small, and pick the corner before the trip
Picture-in-picture is the layout for this shot: the back camera fills the frame with the road, and your face floats in a corner. That matches how driving, riding and courtside shooting generally works best — the wide, changing scene gets the resolution, and the reaction only needs a small window. A split screen works for a passenger conversation, but on a solo drive it gives the dashboard equal weight with your face, which is rarely the point.
Pick the inset corner based on what is actually in the lower half of the windshield view — a dashboard display, a GPS mount, your hands on the wheel — and put the small window somewhere it is not covering any of that. None of this is about being careful for its own sake: a phone that gets too hot stops the recording outright and saves what it has rather than degrading quietly, so the cost of ignoring heat is a shorter file, not a worse one.
The microphone is at the bottom of the phone, and so is the mount
A dual recording carries one audio track, not one per camera, and that track is whatever the phone's microphone actually picks up — road noise, the engine, the stereo and your voice all in the same room sound. A mount that grips the phone from the bottom, or a case that covers the lower edge, can muffle that microphone without you noticing until you play the file back, so it is worth checking exactly where the mount contacts the phone before a long drive rather than after one.
Wind is the harder problem, and it mostly applies to riding rather than driving — a motorcycle or bike mount puts the microphone straight into moving air, and no amount of talking louder fixes that afterwards.
