How to film a furniture assembly video with both iPhone cameras

A furniture build is a good match for this format for the same reason a tutorial is: your hands are doing something specific and your face is reacting to it in real time — the bracket that will not line up, the panel that finally stands up straight — and getting both into one file means not reconstructing that reaction in an editor afterwards from a separate phone.

What makes it a different shoot from a desk tutorial is mostly physical. The subject is usually flat, wide and on the floor rather than upright on a table, the whole thing can run well past an hour, and at some point a power driver or a mallet is going to go off a couple of feet from the microphone. None of that stops a dual-camera recording from working — it just changes which decisions matter.

The practical fix is the same one that applies to any ultra wide framing: keep the part that matters, the joint you are actually working on, centred rather than pushed into a corner, and accept that the very edge of the frame is not where straight lines stay straight.

Let each step be its own take

A dual-camera recording runs straight through from record to stop with no way to pause it mid-take, which sounds like a limitation until a furniture build is the thing being filmed — a build was never going to be one continuous shot anyway. Opening the box and sorting the hardware, each panel going on, flipping the piece over, standing it up for the first time: these are already separate moments with a real gap between them, not a single unbroken scene with a pause you are missing.

Stop the recording at each of those points and start a fresh one when the next step begins. Stopping is never a risky action — the file is finalised the instant you press it, whether that is on purpose or because you set the phone down to go find a hex key — so you end up with a small library of short, complete clips for each step rather than one long file you are hoping survives to the end. The driver and the mallet are the loudest thing in the room

There is one audio track and one microphone, so a loud tool and your own voice cannot be separated afterward if they land on top of each other.

A long build eventually finds the thermal ceiling

Two camera feeds and a real-time composite are a heavy job for the phone to sustain, and a build that runs well past an hour gives heat more time to accumulate than most of the shoots this site covers. iOS escalates through thermal states as the phone warms up: at the elevated “serious” level, an unstarted 1080p recording drops to 720p before it begins, or DualCam warns you instead of changing anything if you are already recording; at “critical” it stops the recording outright and finalises the file rather than letting it run on and risk corrupting it.

The fact that a build already breaks into short takes by step works in your favour here — each stop is also a moment for the phone to cool, so it rarely runs long enough uninterrupted to reach either threshold.
