How to film a miniature painting video with both iPhone cameras

A miniature painting video lives or dies on whether the viewer can actually see the brush doing something — a blend, a thin glaze, an edge highlight a millimetre wide. That is a much smaller subject than most hands-on content asks a phone to frame, and it changes several decisions that would otherwise be routine: how close the phone can get, which lens does that job, and how much of the frame is left over for your face once the model has what it needs.

Recording the front and back cameras at once still solves the same basic problem it solves for any hobby video — the model taking shape and your face talking through it land in one file, with nothing to sync afterward. What is different here is that the model does not move, your hands barely do either, and the session runs long. The interesting decisions are less about action and more about getting a small, still subject lit and framed correctly for an hour at a stretch.

Getting close enough for the detail to read

DualCam does not get the automatic macro hand-off the stock Camera app uses when a single camera drifts close to a subject — that hand-off belongs to a single-lens session, and a multi-camera session connects each side to one specific physical lens rather than a virtual device that can swap lenses for you mid-shot. On an iPhone with an ultra-wide back lens, picking it manually before you start gets the same close-focusing lens macro mode borrows, and it frames closer at a given distance than the standard lens would from the same spot.

Even with that lens chosen, a 28–32mm miniature is small enough that filling the frame with just the model, the way a dedicated macro photo would, is not always realistic in a live composited recording. Plan the shot as hand, brush and model together rather than the model alone — it reads as a close, detailed shot without asking the lens to do more than it can, and it keeps a hand entering and leaving frame from constantly re-triggering focus on empty table.

Why the light that makes the paint look right can make your face look wrong

The front and back cameras are two separate pieces of capture hardware, each running its own exposure and white balance, and a dual recording composites their already-independent images rather than making them share one reading. A hobby lamp angled hard onto the model — which is exactly what accurate colour mixing needs — can leave the back camera correctly exposed for a brightly lit two-inch subject while the front camera, looking at a face lit mostly by whatever else is in the room, ends up noticeably dimmer or a different colour temperature by comparison. Neither camera is doing anything wrong; they are simply looking at two differently lit scenes.

A small second light angled at your face — even a phone-clipped ring light rather than anything built for the hobby — closes most of that gap, because it gives the front camera something closer to the brightness the desk lamp is already giving the back camera. It does not need to match exactly; it needs to stop the two halves of the frame from reading as two different rooms.

Colour accuracy matters more here than in most hobby footage

DualCam’s six filters are applied in the shader as you record, which is worth knowing specifically for this subject: a colour-shifting filter changes what the paint looks like in the file, not just the mood of the shot, and painting content gets watched by people trying to match a colour or judge how a blend actually turned out. None is the filter that keeps that information intact; Warm, Cool or Mono all bend the read in ways that matter more here than they would in a vlog.

If a stylistic filter is important to how the channel looks, treat it as something to add in an edit afterward rather than bake into the recording — the source file stays neutral, and the choice to stylise it is made once you can see the finished paint job next to a reference, not while you are still mixing the colour on the palette.

What you can actually touch mid-session

Unlike a wet-handed craft, painting does not rule out touching the phone the way pottery does — your hands are dry between coats. What still rules it out in practice is paint on your fingers and eyes that do not want to leave the model to hunt for a small on-screen control, so the honest answer is the same as for any craft that needs full attention: decide layout, the picture-in-picture corner, lens and resolution before the first coat goes on, and treat any mid-session change as something to do at a natural pause — while a coat dries, between colours, or when you set the brush down to check the piece under a different angle — rather than something to reach for while the brush is loaded.

Resolution, mute, the countdown and back lens choice lock the moment recording starts regardless; layout, the inset’s corner, size and shape, and the filter stay changeable throughout, which is genuinely useful here because a session this long often benefits from swapping which camera is main once you move from broad basecoating to a detail pass that only the viewer watching your hands really needs to see up close.

A long static session needs breaks the same way an active one does

A single miniature can take well over an hour from primer to final highlight, and two live camera pipelines plus a real-time composite draw on the same thermal and storage budget for every minute of that, whether the subject is moving or not — a still shot is not a cheaper one. At roughly 75 MB per minute, an hour of continuous 1080p footage is around 4.5 GB, and if the phone gets hot enough DualCam drops a fresh recording to 720p before it starts, or finalises an in-progress one and saves what it has rather than losing the session.

Recording in stages — basecoat, shade, highlight, final details — as separate takes rather than one continuous hour does the same job here that it does for any long hands-on process: each stage gets its own natural break to let the phone cool and to check the file actually captured what you think it did, instead of finding out an hour in that the last twenty minutes overheated partway through.

Common follow-up questions

Can I get a true macro close-up of the miniature while recording both cameras?

Not the same way the stock Camera app does. Its automatic macro switch belongs to a single-lens session; a multi-camera session connects to one physical lens per side, so there is no automatic hand-off. Choosing the ultra-wide back lens manually, where your iPhone has one, gets you the same close-focusing lens macro mode borrows — the closest DualCam gets without that automatic switch.

Why does my face look dim or a different colour than the miniature in the same frame?

The two cameras expose and white-balance independently, because they are two separate pieces of hardware looking at two different scenes. A lamp angled hard onto the model for accurate paint colour will usually leave the room around your face comparatively dim by contrast. A second, softer light aimed at your face closes most of the gap.

Will primer or spray fumes near the phone cause a problem?

That is a positioning question rather than a setting DualCam has an answer for. Keep the phone well clear of any spray-can primer or airbrush work, the same way you would keep any electronics away from aerosol residue and dust.
