How to film a pottery or ceramics video with both iPhone cameras
A pottery video wants the same two things a lot of hands-on process content wants in one shot: the wheel — centering, opening, pulling the walls up, shaping — and a face, concentrating through it or reacting once a form holds or goes wrong. Recording the front and back cameras at once puts both into one file from the moment the wheel starts turning, so there is no process clip and a separate reaction clip to line up afterward.
What sets pottery apart from most hands-on subjects is that your hands do not come free again until the piece leaves the wheel. Centering, opening and pulling a wall all happen with both hands wet, coated in slip, and on the clay continuously — there is no moment to reach over, nudge the phone, tap to refocus, or check the frame partway through. Every decision that would normally get made or adjusted mid-take has to get made before the wheel starts turning instead.
One fixed position has to frame the wheel and your face
A tripod fixes a dual recording at a single point in space, and because there is only one phone with a camera on each side, that one point decides both frames at once — there is no separate adjustment for the wheel and for you. That makes the starting position worth more care here than in a seated talking-head shot, because a potter is not sitting still and facing the phone the way an interview subject does. You lean forward over the wheel as a piece opens and the walls come up, and your face moves down and toward the clay through most of a throw rather than staying level and facing outward.
A tripod set at a normal seated eye height, aimed the way it would be for an interview, tends to lose your face the moment you lean in — the front camera ends up looking at the top of your head instead of your face. Set the phone lower and a little to the side instead, roughly level with the wheel head, angled up slightly toward where your face actually sits once you are working rather than where it sits when you first sat down. Get into your normal working posture before you lock the tripod head, and check the live composited preview from there — it is the exact frame the file gets, and it is the only reliable way to confirm the angle works once you are actually leaning over the clay.
Decide the whole shot before the clay touches the wheel
Resolution, mute and the countdown timer lock the moment you press record, and back lens choice locks with them — none of that is specific to pottery, it is true of every dual-camera take. What is specific to pottery is that layout, the picture-in-picture corner, the inset size and shape, and the colour filter are all free to change mid-recording in general, and none of them are reachable here anyway, because your hands are wet and full of clay for the entire throw. A setting that is technically adjustable mid-take is not adjustable if touching the phone means getting clay slip on the screen.
Treat the whole configuration, changeable or not, as a pre-wheel decision: layout, which camera is main, the filter, the lens, the resolution. Wipe your hands, set everything the way you want it, look at the preview once more, and only then centre the clay.
Keeping the wheel’s water and slip off the phone
A wheel head throws water and slip outward as it spins, most forcefully during centering, when the most water is on the clay and the wheel is often running fastest. Position the stand or tripod out to the side of the wheel rather than directly in front of it, far enough back that the spray from a normal centering pass does not reach it — a forearm’s length beyond where your hands work is a reasonable starting distance, and it is worth watching one centering pass before you press record to see where the water actually lands.
If the wheel has a splash pan, keep the phone outside it rather than balanced on its rim, and avoid resting the phone or its stand on the same section of table or bat that gets wet as you work — a surface that is dry when you set up is not necessarily the surface it still is ten minutes into a throw.
Getting close on hands and clay without leaning into the splash zone
Dual camera recording does not get the automatic macro switch the stock Camera app uses to swap to the ultra-wide lens as you approach a subject — that hand-off belongs to a single-camera session, and a multi-camera session connects to one specific physical lens per camera rather than a virtual device that can make that swap for you. On an iPhone with an ultra-wide back lens, picking it manually before you start gets you the same close-focusing lens macro mode borrows, without needing to move the phone itself any closer to the wheel.
That is worth choosing deliberately here, because it solves two problems with one setting: an ultra-wide lens held at a given distance frames closer than the standard lens would from that same spot, which means the phone can stay further back from the spray while still reading as a close, detailed shot of the clay taking shape. Back lens choice locks in once recording starts, the same as resolution, so this is one more decision that belongs on the list you make before your hands touch the clay.
One take per piece, not one long session
A dual recording runs straight through from record to stop, with no way to pause it mid-file, and a piece on the wheel has the same shape — once clay is centred and opened, stopping partway through to reset anything tends to cost the form rather than save the take. A studio session covering several pieces already has a natural break at the edge of each one: one take per piece, wire it off, set up the next ball of clay, start a fresh take, rather than trying to carry one continuous file across pieces with the wheel wiped down and re-centred in between.
Shorter takes also help with heat, since two live camera pipelines and a real-time composite draw on the same thermal budget the whole time you are recording. Common follow-up questions
Can I recentre the picture-in-picture window or switch the back lens partway through a throw?
The window’s corner, size, shape and the filter can change mid-recording in general, but the back lens and resolution lock the moment you press record either way. In practice, wet and clay-covered hands rule out touching the phone at all once you start, so treat every setting — adjustable or not — as something to decide beforehand.
Will splashed water or slip damage the phone?

Why does the front camera keep losing my face while the back camera frames the wheel fine?
The front and back cameras are fixed to opposite faces of the same flat phone, so once the back camera is angled to see into the wheel, the front camera’s direction follows from that, not from a separate choice. Leaning forward over the clay moves your face further than a seated interview does, so set the tripod lower and angled up slightly toward where your face ends up while you are actually working, not where it was when you sat down.
