How to film a tattoo or piercing session with both iPhone cameras
A tattoo or piercing video is really two things happening in the same second: the needle doing the work, and the face of the person feeling it. Cut together afterwards from two separate clips, it reads as staged, because you cannot fake the exact instant a flinch lines up with a specific pass of the needle. Recording both cameras into one file the moment it happens is the only way to keep that instant intact.
What makes this shoot different from most others is that nobody's hands are free to hold the phone. The artist needs both hands for the machine or the needle, and the client is not in a position to hold a camera steady either. That one constraint decides most of the setup below before framing or layout even come into it.
Put it on a stand, not in anyone's hand
Every other consideration here — layout, focus, framing — assumes the phone is not moving, because nobody in the room can hold it. A small tripod or a stand-mounted phone clip resting on the workstation or a nearby table does the job; the canvas is a fixed 1080-pixel-wide rectangle either way, 1080×1920 or the taller 1080×2340, so the mount just needs to keep that rectangle pointed at both the work area and the client's face at once.
Tap-to-focus and exposure are worth setting once, right after the phone is positioned and before the session starts, because a locked-off shot like this one will not need refocusing the way a handheld shot would. Picture-in-picture is the natural layout here: one camera fills the canvas with the work itself — the needle, the ink, the piercing site — and the other sits in a corner window on the client's face.
