Put something — even your own body — between the mic and the gust
Anything between the microphone and the moving air reduces the turbulence that reaches it, and it does not need to be specialised gear. Standing with your back to the wind, angling the phone slightly toward the lee side of your body, or choosing a doorway or a parked car to stand near for a stationary shot all cut down what the mic has to deal with. None of this touches the lenses or the framing — it is purely about where the air is allowed to move.
Switch to a wired microphone with a windscreen
This is the most reliable fix, because it replaces the exposed problem entirely instead of working around it. Plugging in a wired lavalier or shotgun mic makes it the default audio input the same way it does for any other reason to use one, and even a basic foam windscreen does mechanically what the phone's bare microphone opening cannot: break up the air before it hits the diaphragm. Do not reach for a Bluetooth mic to solve this
AirPods and other Bluetooth microphones do get used automatically once iOS has switched audio input to them, but they do nothing for wind — the microphone is still a small, unshielded opening, now sitting in open air near your ear instead of protected in your hand or a pocket. Bluetooth audio also adds its own delay and compression on top of that, which is a tradeoff worth taking for a cable-free shot, not a wind-noise fix.
If the wind still won, decide before you press record
