Is dual camera video better on a newer iPhone?

Mostly no. Once an iPhone passes the multi-camera support check, the shape of what it can record is fixed by the app, not by the chip: the same canvas size, the same frame rate, the same layouts and filters, the same file format come out of a five-year-old supported iPhone and a current one. There is no hidden higher tier a newer phone unlocks.

The question people actually mean, though, is narrower: given two supported iPhones, does a recording taken on the newer one look or hold up better? That part has a real answer, and it comes down to exactly two things — whether the heavier resolution setting stays available, and how long a take runs before the phone gets hot enough to end it. Everything else is identical by design.

What is fixed by the app, not the chip

The composited canvas DualCam writes is 1080 pixels wide, either 1920 tall for a standard 9:16 frame or 2340 tall to fill a modern iPhone screen — and that choice belongs to you, not to your phone's generation. Both cameras are always locked to 30 frames per second so the two streams stay in step, on the oldest supported iPhone and the newest one alike. No supported device gets 4K, because a multi-camera session is not two independent recordings; every camera in it has to run a multi-cam-capable format and the combined cost has to fit inside a hardware budget, and that budget rules out very high formats on every iPhone that qualifies, not just the older ones.

The picture-in-picture and split layouts, the four PiP corners, the three inset sizes and three inset shapes, the six live filters, the countdown timer, mute, and the built-in library that holds every take until you save or share it — none of that is gated by chip generation. Encoded file size is fixed the same way: DualCam writes at roughly 10 Mbps regardless of which capture resolution you chose, so a minute of dual video costs about the same 75 MB on a phone from either end of the supported range. A newer iPhone does not hand you a bigger, sharper, or differently shaped file by default.

What actually varies: whether 1080p holds

Resolution is where chip generation shows up first. DualCam offers 720p and 1080p capture, and 1080p roughly doubles the pixel throughput each camera has to sustain. Every multi-camera session carries a hardware cost budget, and the app handles this by measuring rather than guessing: when you switch to 1080p it reconfigures both cameras and checks whether the resulting session fits, and if it does not, it reverts to 720p and tells you the setting is unavailable on this device instead of letting the recording fail partway through.

A newer chip generally carries more of that budget to spend, so 1080p is more likely to be offered at all, and more likely to survive being selected at the start of a long or demanding take. On an iPhone near the bottom of the supported range, 720p is often the setting that is available every time, while 1080p is the one worth testing on a real take before you rely on it for something you cannot reshoot.

What else varies: how long before heat ends the take

The other real difference is thermal headroom. Running two camera pipelines, a live GPU composite and a hardware encode at once is one of the heavier things a phone can be asked to do, and iOS reports a device-wide thermal state that escalates in steps as the phone heats up. DualCam reacts to two of those steps: at the elevated "serious" level it drops a not-yet-started 1080p recording down to 720p before you begin, and at "critical" it ends the recording outright, finalising the file rather than leaving it broken.

A newer chip doing the same combined workload generally runs cooler for longer, so it tends to reach those thermal steps later into a take — the phone can still overheat, given enough heat, sun and time, but it usually takes more of a long recording to get there. This mostly matters for takes measured in many minutes rather than short clips: a thirty-second reaction shot is unlikely to hit either threshold on any supported iPhone, while a long, unbroken tutorial or interview is where the gap between chip generations actually shows up.

The mitigations are the same regardless of which iPhone you have

A thin, breathable case off, out of direct sun, not fresh off fast charging, shot at 720p, and broken into several shorter takes instead of one long one — every one of those helps a newer iPhone go longer before the "serious" state and helps an older one avoid reaching "critical" at all. None of it is chip-specific; it is the same advice either way, just with more margin for error on newer hardware.

So is it worth upgrading just for this?

If your current iPhone already records dual video the way you want — 1080p stays available, and your takes are short enough or cool enough that heat never ends one — a newer iPhone would not change the recording itself. The canvas, the layouts, the filters and the file are the same either way. What a newer phone actually buys is margin: a better chance 1080p is available on a hot day, and more minutes of a long, demanding take before thermal throttling calls it. If you regularly get pushed to 720p, or a take you care about has ended early from heat, that margin is real. If your recordings are short and your current iPhone has not given you either problem, there is not much here to upgrade for.

Will a newer iPhone give me a bigger canvas or 4K dual video?

No. The canvas is always 1080 pixels wide, at 1920 or 2340 tall, and no supported iPhone offers 4K for dual recording — the combined cost of two multi-cam streams plus real-time compositing rules that out on every device, not just older ones. A newer chip changes how reliably you get the settings on offer, not what the ceiling is.

My friend has an older iPhone than mine and 1080p works fine for them — why does mine drop to 720p?

Hardware budget is measured per device, not assumed from a spec sheet, so two different iPhones — even close in age — can land on different sides of the same threshold depending on their exact chip and what else is running. Is a newer iPhone at least guaranteed not to overheat during dual recording?
