Why it does not land in Photos by itself

Photos is a library shared across every app on your iPhone, and writing into it is a deliberate action, not a side effect of recording. An app has to ask your permission and then explicitly add a file. The stock Camera app asks for that permission once and uses it on every single photo and video; a dual-camera app can choose not to, and keep a library of its own instead.

DualCam keeps every take inside the app itself, with a thumbnail, until you decide to save it to Photos or share it. That is stated plainly rather than buried in a settings menu, because it also keeps the privacy story simple: there is no server behind DualCam, so a recording sitting in the app’s own folder is exactly as private as one you have already saved — nothing is uploaded either way.

Where the file actually sits first

That in-app storage is not a black box. DualCam’s built-in library shows every recording as a thumbnail you can open, scrub through and review before deciding what to do with it — including a take that ended early because the phone got hot or ran low on storage. The file is finalised and kept there the moment recording stops, for the same reason: so you get to see what you actually got before committing to save or delete it.

Getting a clip into your Camera Roll or another app

Two different exits, not one

Save writes a copy into Photos, the same library the stock Camera app uses, which is the option you want if you are going to browse, edit or upload from your regular Camera Roll. Share opens the normal iOS share sheet instead, which can hand the file to Files, Messages, a specific editing app, or Photos anyway — the more direct option when you already know exactly where the clip needs to go.

The permission prompt only shows up once it matters

The first time you tap Save, iOS shows its own system dialog asking for permission to add to your photo library. This is the same one-time prompt any app has to ask for before it can write to Photos, and it appears at that moment rather than when you first open the app, because that is the first moment the app actually needs it. Decline it and Save will not work until you grant the permission in Settings, but nothing about the recording itself changes.

An unsaved recording is not a lost one

It is worth separating two different problems. A recording that has not been saved to Photos yet is exactly where you left it, inside the app’s library, for as long as you do not delete it there. A recording that genuinely disappeared — because the app was reinstalled, or storage was cleared some other way — is a different, much rarer situation, and not something normal use causes.
