Why does my face look dark in dual camera video?
The usual cause is not the app and not the phone. The front camera and the back camera are, almost by definition, pointed at two different scenes with two different amounts of light, and each one sets its own exposure by looking only at what it sees. Nothing coordinates the two decisions, because there is nothing to coordinate — a bright wall behind you and a dimmer room in front of you are simply two separate exposure problems that happen to land in the same frame.
None of this is a defect to route around with a setting. It is a lighting problem with a lighting fix, plus a couple of tools that help once the light itself is close to right.
Two cameras, two independent exposure decisions
Every camera on an iPhone measures the brightness of its own frame and adjusts itself to expose that frame correctly — a lens pointed at a bright window closes down, a lens pointed at a dim room opens up, entirely independently of what the other lens is doing. This is how camera autoexposure works in general, not something specific to recording two streams at once, but it becomes visible the moment both streams end up in the same composited frame.
The classic case: you sit with a window behind you, and the back camera is pointed further into the bright room or outside. It exposes for that brightness and looks correct on its own. The front camera, aimed at you with that same bright window behind your head, does the same thing — it exposes for the window, and your face, now a dim foreground against a bright background, comes out as a dark shape or a silhouette. Neither camera is broken. Each one produced a technically correct exposure for what it was pointed at.
Fix the light before touching a setting
The most reliable fix happens before you press record. Put the light source in front of the face that needs it, not behind. A window works as fill light if you face it rather than have it at your back; a lamp works the same way. If you cannot move the light or the camera, add a second small source facing the darker side — a phone screen propped up, a lamp turned toward you, even a light-coloured wall opposite the window bouncing some of that brightness back.
The room matters more than people expect. Overhead light alone tends to carve shadows under eyes and chin, which reads as unevenness even when the overall exposure is fine. A softer, more frontal source flattens that out and gives the camera an easier scene to expose correctly in the first place.
Tap the side that needs help

When the mismatch will not close
Some pairings cannot be fully reconciled. A back camera pointed at bright daylight next to a front camera indoors under a warm lamp is not just an exposure gap, it is a colour temperature gap too, and no amount of tapping fixes that. In that situation it is often more effective to stop fighting the mismatch and use a filter or layout that makes it read as a choice rather than a mistake.
The Mono filter, applied live as you record, removes colour entirely, so a mismatched colour temperature between the two feeds stops mattering — two shots that clash in colour usually still agree reasonably well in brightness, which is why black and white often looks intentional where a colour mismatch looks like an error. Warm and Cool are gentler options that nudge one scene closer to the other without going fully monochrome.
Layout also changes how forgiving a mismatch looks. A small picture-in-picture inset sitting on a much brighter main frame exaggerates the contrast, because the eye compares the two at very different sizes. A top-and-bottom split gives both feeds equal weight and equal space, which tends to make a lighting difference read as two different rooms rather than one broken shot.
A short checklist
- Sit facing your main light source, not with it behind you.
- Check the back camera scene too — a window or bright sky in that frame is the usual root cause, even though the symptom shows up on your face.
- Tap the darker feed before you start recording — it is one less adjustment to make once the shot is already rolling.
- If the two scenes will never match in colour, consider Mono, Warm or Cool rather than fighting it in colour.
- A top-and-bottom split hides a lighting mismatch better than a small picture-in-picture inset does.
Common follow-up questions
Does the app blend the exposure between the two cameras automatically?
No — each camera reads only its own frame and sets its own exposure, which is how autoexposure on a multi-camera session works generally. Tapping a frame sets focus and exposure for that region specifically; it does not average the two feeds together.
Can I fix the exposure after recording, since it is one file?
Not the way you could with two separate camera files edited afterwards.
