Can you edit a dual camera video after you record it?
Yes for anything a normal video editor does to a normal video file, no for anything that would require the two camera images to still be separate. A dual-camera recording is not a project file — it is a finished MP4 with one video track and one audio track, exactly like a clip from the stock Camera app. Trim it, cut it, add music or captions, drop it into a longer edit: all of that works the same way it works on any other video, because at that point it is just a video.
What will not work is anything that assumes the front and back camera are still two separate pieces you can rearrange. They stopped being separate the moment DualCam composited them into one frame and wrote that frame to disk. The layout, the picture-in-picture corner, the inset size and shape, the filter, and which camera was the big one are not settings stored next to the file — they are the pixels of the file.
Why there is nothing left to rearrange
DualCam draws both camera images into a single frame on the GPU while you are recording, and that composited frame is the one written to the video file — there is no re-render step afterwards, so the file you get is not an approximation of the shot, it is the shot. That also means the two source images never exist on their own anywhere: no hidden second track, no project data describing where the inset used to sit. Once a frame is written, the decision that produced it is final.
This is the same fact that shows up elsewhere as “resolution, mute and the countdown lock the moment you press record” and “tapping the darker feed only affects that feed, not the exposure balance between them.” It is one underlying design — the recorded file is the finished product, not a draft — and editability after the fact follows directly from it.
What a normal editor can still do
None of this needs the two cameras to be separate, because none of it looks inside the frame and asks which camera contributed which pixels. It treats the file the way it treats any other video: a sequence of finished frames with one audio track underneath.
- Trim the start and end, or cut out a section in the middle — ordinary timeline editing that any app handles on any video.
- Add background music, sound effects or a voiceover on a new track, layered over the original audio.
- Add captions, text overlays or stickers on top of the frame.
- Speed the whole clip up or down, or add a filter or color grade on top of the one already baked in.
- Export at a lower resolution, crop the outer edges, or splice it between other clips in a longer video.
What cannot be undone
Splitting it back into two camera feeds
There is no way to pull the front and back camera images apart again, because they were never saved apart. Wanting the back-camera shot without your face in the corner, or wanting to send a friend just the front-camera reaction, both run into the same wall: that data does not exist as two files, only as one already-merged picture.
Moving the picture-in-picture window, or switching layout
The corner the inset sits in, its size, its shape, and whether it is picture-in-picture or a split are all choices that changed what got drawn into the frame while recording. An editor working on the finished file cannot move a window that no longer exists as a separate layer — it can only crop, cover, or overlay something new on top of pixels that are already final.
Recovering what a split screen cropped
A left-right split keeps roughly the middle half of each source frame and discards the rest to fit a vertical canvas. That discarded quarter on each side was never written to the file at all — it is not hidden behind a black bar or sitting off-canvas waiting to be revealed, it simply was not recorded. No editor can bring back a part of the frame that never made it into the video.
Changing the filter or swapping which camera is “main”
A live filter changes the color of the pixels as they are drawn, so it is gone the instant the frame is written — an editor can add a new color grade on top, but it is layering, not reverting to the unfiltered original. The same is true of which camera fills the frame and which one is the inset: that choice shaped the composition of every frame already saved.
The practical takeaway
If a decision matters enough that you might want to change it later, make it before you press record rather than planning to fix it in editing. Layout and lens are worth settling in advance for exactly this reason. If you are genuinely unsure which layout will read better, the cheap fix is not editing after the fact — it is shooting a second take with the other layout, since DualCam lets you change layout mid-recording anyway and a fresh take costs a few seconds.
Everything downstream of the shot — trimming for pacing, adding music, writing captions, exporting for a specific platform — is completely normal editing work, and a dual-camera file is not a special case for any of it. Can I get the front and back camera as two separate video files after recording?
No. DualCam never saves them separately — the composited frame is the only thing written to disk. If you might want the two angles apart later, that has to be decided before you record, not fixed afterwards.
Can I move the picture-in-picture window to a different corner after recording?
No, the inset position is baked into the frame at the moment it was recorded. You can crop or cover part of the image in an editor, but you cannot move a window that no longer exists as a separate layer.
