Can you zoom or switch lenses while recording dual camera video?

Switching to a different physical lens on the back camera — say from the main wide lens to an ultra wide or a telephoto — is a separate control, a lens picker, not something that happens automatically as you zoom past a lens’s range the way it does in Apple’s own Camera app.

A multi-camera session is built differently: it connects to specific physical camera devices, one per input, because that is what the multi-cam format check operates on. A virtual device that silently reaches across several lenses is not the kind of thing that check can reason about, so multi-camera apps generally work with individual lenses instead.

Pinching in on the same lens does not add a second stream or change the format either camera is running, so it does not compete for that budget the way raising the resolution does.
What zoom does cost is the ordinary thing it costs on any camera: past a lens’s optical range, you are cropping and enlarging the sensor image digitally, and detail drops the further in you go. That is a property of the lens and the zoom amount, not something specific to recording two cameras at once — it is just more visible here, because the frame you are drawing into is often smaller to begin with, especially in a picture-in-picture inset or the cropped half of a split screen.
Deciding your lens before you press record
Layout, the picture-in-picture corner, its size and shape, and the colour filter can all be changed while DualCam is recording. Which back lens you are on is not on that list — switching physical lenses in a multi-camera session is a heavier operation than adjusting how the composited frame is drawn, closer in cost to changing resolution than to nudging an inset around a corner. Treat it the same way: settle on your lens before you start, rather than planning to switch mid-take.
The front camera does not need this decision. An iPhone has one front-facing camera, so there is nothing to pick there — the only lens choice in a dual recording is on the back.
