Does deleting a dual camera app delete your recordings too?

Sometimes, and it comes down to which of two buttons you actually tapped. Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage and select any app, and iOS puts two options right next to each other: “Offload App” and “Delete App”. They look almost identical and both change something about that app right away, but only one of them touches what the app had saved. “Delete App” removes the app and everything it stored, immediately and for good. “Offload App” removes only the app itself, and quietly leaves everything it had saved sitting on the phone, waiting for a reinstall to put it back.

For most apps this distinction barely matters: a game’s save file, a shopping app’s cart, a note-taking app’s cache. For a dual-camera recorder, it can be the difference between a video existing and not, because a recording that has not been saved anywhere else lives in exactly one place on the phone — the app’s own library — and whether it survives depends entirely on which of those two buttons you pressed.

Why there is anything to lose in the first place

Every app on iPhone gets its own private folder that only it is normally allowed to read or write — a sandbox, in the technical term. That folder is where an app keeps whatever it needs between launches: settings, cached images, a database, or in this case, the actual video files a dual-camera recording produces. None of that is visible from the Files app or from any other app; it exists only as far as its owner reaches.

A dual-camera recording is written into that private folder the moment you stop filming, not into Photos and not onto any server, because there is no server behind an app that promises nothing leaves your phone. It stays there, playable from inside the app’s own library, until you personally decide to save it to Photos or share it somewhere else. Until that decision, the app’s private folder is not a cache or a backup copy — it is the only copy.

Delete App: immediate, and reachable from more than one place

Deleting an app is designed to reclaim every byte it used, and iOS does exactly that in one step, however you get there. Long-press the icon on the Home Screen and choose “Remove App” then “Delete App”, or go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage, open the app, and tap the same “Delete App” button sitting right next to “Offload App” — either route removes the app binary and its entire private folder together, instantly, with no trash can to check afterward.

That iPhone Storage screen is where the real risk of tapping the wrong thing lives, because “Offload App” and “Delete App” sit stacked right next to each other and only one of them is reversible. It is worth reading the “Documents & Data” size shown just above those buttons before tapping either one — that number is telling you, in plain megabytes, how much of what you are about to touch is actually your recordings rather than the app’s own code. A third option, “Remove from Home Screen”, shows up in the long-press menu too and looks like a cleanup step, but it only hides the icon: the app and everything inside it stay fully installed, reachable through Search or the App Library, and no storage is freed at all.

Offload App: the same kind of button, a reversible outcome

Offloading removes the compiled app to free up the space that takes, and deliberately leaves the private folder exactly where it was. Its icon does not vanish from the Home Screen the way a deleted app’s does — it stays in place, dimmed, with a small download badge, and tapping it, or reinstalling from the App Store, puts the app back and restores that same folder before the app even finishes launching. From the app’s point of view, it never left.

iOS can also do this on its own. If automatic offloading for unused apps has ever been turned on, the system may offload an app you have not opened in a while the moment storage runs low, without asking first. That is a save, not a risk — it is the same reversible removal as doing it by hand from iPhone Storage.

Offloading a recorder frees less space than it looks like it should

For a game or a photo-editing app, the private folder is usually small next to the app itself, so offloading reclaims most of the space that app was using. A dual-camera app inverts that: the app itself is a modest download, and the private folder can hold gigabytes of unsaved footage if takes have been piling up in its library. Offloading such an app frees only the smaller of the two numbers, because the part it is designed to protect is also the part actually taking up the room.

The practical upshot is the opposite of what people usually assume when storage is tight: clearing out old, already-saved takes from inside the app’s own library first, then offloading if you still need the space back, gets you closer to what you were expecting than offloading alone ever will.

The one thing that can still bring a deleted recording back

A full “Delete App” is not necessarily the end of the story if the phone itself has a backup from before you deleted it. An iCloud Backup — the whole-device kind, not to be confused with iCloud Photos — normally includes each app’s private folder as part of backing up everything on the phone, the same way it includes your messages or your Home Screen layout. Restoring the phone from a backup made before the deletion, whether onto the same phone or a new one, brings that folder back along with everything else in the backup.

This only ever works as a whole-device restore, never as something the app itself can request, because there is nothing for it to ask — no account, no server, nothing it could reach out to and recover from independently. It is also only as good as your last backup: anything recorded after that backup was made is not in it, and a backup taken after you already deleted the app will not have the folder either.

A short checklist
