Does dual camera recording support Spatial Audio on iPhone?

No. “Spatial Audio” and “dual camera recording” both sound like they are reaching for something bigger than an ordinary recording, but they solve different problems, and neither can be reached from inside the other's session — the same way dual camera recording cannot also produce a spatial video.

Spatial Audio is about anchoring sound to a single, unified scene so it can be played back with head tracking. Dual camera recording composites two different subjects into one frame and writes one plain mono track underneath. Below is what each of those actually does, and why a composite has no single scene left for directional audio to anchor to.

What Spatial Audio is actually capturing

Spatial Audio, in the stock Camera app, records from the iPhone's built-in microphones as an array rather than as one blended input. Because each microphone sits in a slightly different physical position, the system can work out roughly which direction a sound came from relative to the camera, and it encodes that directional information alongside the audio instead of discarding it.

Play that recording back through a pair of AirPods with head tracking, and the sound field rotates as you turn your head, so a voice that was to the right of frame keeps sounding like it is to the right of frame even as you look away from the screen. Play it back on a phone speaker or an ordinary pair of headphones and it behaves like normal audio — the directional layer is simply not being rendered by whatever is playing it back.

A third-party app never sees the raw array to begin with

A dual-camera app does not talk to microphone hardware directly. It asks iOS for the current default audio input and records whatever that single, already-blended stream delivers — the same abstraction that lets a Bluetooth microphone or a wired lavalier become the input automatically. That is a deliberate, sensible interface for almost every recording app, but it means the raw, per-microphone array signal Spatial Audio is built from has already been reduced to one channel before a third-party session ever receives it.

DualCam writes that single stream as one mono AAC track alongside the composited video, the same audio path a single-camera recording on the same phone would use. There is no setting anywhere in a dual-camera app that could recover directional information from a source that was never handed a directional signal in the first place.

Even with the array, a composite has no one scene to anchor to

Set the input question aside entirely, and Spatial Audio still depends on something dual camera recording does not have: a single camera looking at a single scene, so that “sound coming from the right of frame” means one specific thing. That is true of an ordinary video and true of spatial video's stereo pair — both are one scene, viewed one way.

A dual-camera composite is two different subjects drawn into one canvas on the GPU — you in one region of the frame, whatever the other camera is pointed at in another. There is no single “direction relative to the camera” for a sound to be anchored to, because there are two cameras pointed at two different things sharing one picture. Spatial Audio's whole premise — rotate your head, hear the scene rotate with it — does not have a scene to rotate in a frame built out of two of them.

What a dual-camera file gives you instead

What you get is not a smaller or degraded Spatial Audio track — it is a deliberately plain one, built to sound the same everywhere rather than to depend on a specific pair of headphones to be understood correctly. A mono track plays back identically on a phone speaker, a laptop, a pair of wired earbuds or an AirPods case sitting in someone's pocket, because it was never encoded to need head tracking to make sense.

If directional or immersive sound is genuinely the goal

Actual Spatial Audio capture is the stock Camera app's job, recording one camera in the video mode that supports it, on a phone whose microphone array is being read directly rather than through the shared system input every third-party app receives.

Common follow-up questions

Could a future update add Spatial Audio recording to dual camera video?

Not as a toggle inside the same session. Spatial Audio needs direct access to the phone's microphone array anchored to one camera's single scene; dual camera recording composites two different subjects into one frame and only ever receives one already-blended audio stream from iOS. It is a different capture pipeline, not a missing setting.

Does turning on Spatial Audio in iPhone settings change how a dual camera recording sounds?

No. That setting affects how headphones render audio that was encoded with directional metadata. A dual-camera recording never contains that metadata — it is one mono track — so there is nothing for the setting to act on.

Does connecting AirPods change any of this?

No. AirPods just become the system's default audio input, the same as any Bluetooth microphone, and the recording still ends up as one ordinary mono track. Head tracking is a playback feature for content that was captured with directional metadata in the first place.

Can spatial or directional audio be added afterward in an editor?

Not in Apple's Spatial Audio format, since that depends on metadata captured at recording time. A separately recorded binaural track can be layered over the video afterward for an immersive listening effect, but that is a different technique, not a recovered spatial track.
