Does dual camera video support Cinematic mode on iPhone?
Short answer: no. Cinematic mode is not one of DualCam’s controls, and it is not a setting hiding a level down in a menu — it depends on a depth map and an automatic focus rack that a multi-camera session has no room to build while it is already running two live camera streams at once.
The reason is the same one behind Portrait-style background blur being unavailable in dual recording, and it points at the same kind of workaround: real rack focus needs information simultaneous front-and-back recording never captures, but a good amount of the shallow-focus look people actually want comes from lens choice, distance and where you tap to focus — no depth data required.
What Cinematic mode is actually doing
Cinematic mode captures ordinary video and a depth map at the same time, then uses that depth information to keep whichever subject the system judges to be the point of interest in focus while letting everything at a different distance fall softly out of focus in front of or behind it. When the subject changes — a new face enters the frame, someone looks away and another person starts talking — focus racks from one to the other automatically, the same move a camera operator makes by hand on a film set.
Building the depth map is a capture task in its own right, not something added afterward. The phone gathers distance information for the scene alongside the image itself, using a capture configuration set up specifically to produce it — which is also why the focus point can still be adjusted after recording in Photos: the depth data was captured, not guessed.
Why a multi-camera session has no room for it
Running the front and back cameras at once already spends what a multi-camera session has to spend. Every camera in the session has to run a format that explicitly supports multi-cam, and the combined cost of both streams has to fit inside one hardware budget — the same reason the session cannot use convenience presets and resolution tops out lower than a single camera could reach on its own. Depth capture is a separate job with its own sensors and its own processing, ordinarily run when one camera has the full budget to itself, not when two are already sharing it.

What actually creates separation instead
Distance still does most of the real work, with or without a depth map. The further your background sits from your subject, the more naturally it falls out of focus just from how a lens forms an image — moving a subject three steps further from a wall does more for separation than any processing would.
Lens choice matters too. Where your iPhone has a telephoto option, it compresses distance and reads as more separated than the same subject shot wide from the same spot; an ultra-wide lens does the opposite and keeps the whole scene, background included, sharp and prominent.

Decide the lens before you press record
Back lens choice locks in the moment recording starts, the same as resolution — layout, the picture-in-picture corner, its size and shape, and the colour filter can all change mid-take, but which back lens you are on cannot. If a shot is built around a shallow, separated look, pick telephoto before you start rather than planning to switch to it once the take is already running.
A finished dual-camera file can still take a uniform blur or vignette in an editor afterward, the same as any video, but not a selective one that knows where a subject ends and the background begins — that still needs depth data that was never recorded. Getting separation right in camera, with distance, lens and framing, is more reliable than trying to fake it afterward.
