How to film a candle or soap making video with both iPhone cameras
A candle or soap video wants the same pairing most hands-on process content wants: the melt, the colour and fragrance going in, the pour, sitting in the same frame as a face watching it happen. Recording the front and back cameras at once puts both into one file the moment the wax starts melting, so there is no separate close-up clip and reaction clip to line up in an editor afterward.
What sets candle and soap making apart from most other hands-on subjects is that the one moment the whole video is built around — the pour — cannot be paused, redone, or reached for once it starts. Wax that has started to set will not pour cleanly a second time, and a lye solution or a soap batter at trace does not wait for you to fix the shot. Every decision that would normally get made mid-take has to get made before that pour begins, and the heat and the fumes involved change where the phone can safely be while it happens.
The pour is one take — settle the frame before your hands are full
For most of a melt, both hands are free: measuring wax or oils, adding colour or fragrance, stirring. The pour is different. One hand is on a hot pot or pitcher and the other is often steadying a mould, and neither one is available to nudge a stand, tap to refocus, or check that a face is still in frame. Whatever framing was set before the pour started is the framing the whole pour gets recorded in.
Picture-in-picture corner, inset size and shape, and the colour filter can all still be changed while DualCam is recording, but the back lens and the resolution cannot — they lock in the moment you press record, the same way they do for any dual-camera take. Run a dry pass with an empty pot in hand, in the position you will actually be standing in, before the wax or the lye solution is anywhere near ready. That is the only point at which you can still see the preview — which is the exact frame being recorded — and adjust it.
Give the phone room to stay out of the steam and the splash
Melting wax over a double boiler throws off steam, and a lye solution heats itself as the lye dissolves in the water, often steaming too. A phone held or mounted close enough to catch that steam risks a fogged or spotted lens for the rest of the take, and there is no setting in DualCam that fixes a lens after the fact — the frame you record with a clouded lens is the frame in the finished file. A splash from a pour, hot wax or a caustic solution, is worse than fogging and is a reason to keep the phone back regardless of the shot.
The fix is distance, not a setting: stand the phone further back on a tripod or a clamp than feels necessary, and use pinch-to-zoom within the lens you have already chosen to get back the closeness you lost. Zooming digitally within a lens costs no extra hardware budget the way switching lenses or resolution does, so it is the right tool here — a genuinely closer physical position is the one thing not worth trading for a better shot of a hot pour.
Ventilation is going to compete with the one microphone you have
Fragrance oil and, more seriously, lye fumes are reasons to have a window open or a fan running, and that is not something to compromise on for the sake of a quieter recording. Keep the phone as close to your own voice as the steam and splash distance from the section above allows, rather than pulling it back further than necessary. Do not record through the wait — the set or cure belongs in its own clip
A candle sets in an hour or so; cold-process soap needs weeks before it is cured enough to use. Common follow-up questions
Can I move the picture-in-picture window right as I pour?
Nothing stops you technically — corner, size, shape and filter all stay changeable while DualCam is recording — but the pour is exactly the moment your hands are full holding hot wax or lye and a mould, so it is not really reachable in practice. Settle it beforehand the same way you settle the back lens and resolution, which do lock at the start of the take.
Is 1080p safe to use for a candle or soap pour?
Usually, yes. A pour itself only lasts a minute or two, which is short enough that the thermal throttling that affects long 1080p takes rarely has time to kick in. The double boiler or the warm room a hot pour happens in adds a little to the phone's own heat load, so drop to 720p if you are shooting several batches back to back without a break.
Can dual-camera recording show the candle cooling or the soap curing sped up, in the same file as the pour?
No. Speeding footage up after recording only discards frames that were genuinely captured, which is honest but nowhere near what a real time-lapse compresses over hours or weeks.
