How to film a cooking video with both iPhone cameras
A cooking video has the same shape as a tutorial — what is happening in the pan or on the board, and the person narrating it — but a stove brings variables no other subject on this site has to deal with: steam, splatter, an open flame or a hot burner, and a work surface you are going to bang into repeatedly. Recording the front and back cameras at once still puts the dish and your face into one file from the first chop, so a recipe video does not need a separate demo clip and a voiceover pass to line up afterwards.

The pan leads, your face reacts
Most of a cooking video is the food itself — the chop, the sear, the fold — and your face is there to react to it and narrate, not to compete with it for space. Picture-in-picture with the back camera filling the frame is the natural default here: the board or the pan fills the recording, and your face floats in a small window in whichever corner does not end up under a cabinet or a hanging light.

A reach across the counter rules out one split
If you prefer a split layout to picture-in-picture, the two ways to split are not equal here. A top-and-bottom split keeps the full width of both frames, which matters because cooking rarely stays inside a tight box — you reach sideways for the salt, pull a bowl in from off to one side, or turn to grab something off the stove behind you.
A left-and-right split crops roughly a quarter off each side of both source frames to fit a vertical canvas, and that missing edge is exactly where a reach across the counter goes. It works fine for a static setup where nobody moves sideways, but for solo cooking with real reach, top-and-bottom or picture-in-picture is the safer choice.
Steam, splatter and where the phone actually sits
A phone propped right over a pan sits directly in the path of steam and grease, and both fog a lens and leave a film on it that a wipe mid-recording will not fully clear. Give the setup a little distance and height instead of leaning the phone in close for a tighter shot — the ultra wide lens on the back camera, where your iPhone has one, buys back that closeness without putting the lens in the splash zone.
Do not rest the phone on the same board or counter you are chopping or pounding on. Every knock travels through whatever surface the phone is touching and straight into the microphone at its bottom edge, and a stand or mount that grips that same edge can muffle it without being obvious until you listen back. A stand set a little further down the counter, or clipped to something that is not absorbing the chopping, keeps the one audio track usable.
Two light sources that never agree
The front and back cameras set exposure independently, each reading only the frame it sees, and a kitchen makes that mismatch louder than most subjects do: a warm, often yellowish light angled over the stove or under a rangehood, against whatever ordinary room light happens to be on your face. Neither camera knows what the other is looking at, so a pan that reads perfectly exposed can sit right next to a face that reads dull or dark by comparison — and if the stove light and the room light differ in warmth, that is a colour temperature gap on top of the brightness one.
Tap the frame that needs help before you rely on it — tap-to-focus carries exposure with it — rather than trying to fix both sides at once, since there is no shared correction across the two feeds. If colour is the real problem rather than just brightness, Warm or Cool can nudge one scene toward the other, and Mono removes the mismatch entirely by taking colour out of the equation.
A recipe is longer than a single take
A dual-camera recording runs straight through from record to stop with no way to freeze it mid-file, and a kitchen already hands you natural break points that make that a non-issue: the ten minutes something simmers, the twenty minutes something bakes, the wait for water to boil are not footage worth keeping the camera rolling through anyway. Stop the take, let the actual waiting happen off camera, and start a fresh one when there is something to show again.
Breaking a recipe into one take per step also works in your favor on heat, which matters more in a kitchen than almost anywhere else on this site — a stove already running, an oven radiating, and two live camera pipelines plus a GPU composite are all drawing on the same thermal budget. Should I use picture-in-picture or split screen for a cooking video?
Picture-in-picture with the back camera leading is the safer default — it keeps the dish as the full frame while your face rides in a corner. If you want a split, use top-and-bottom rather than left-and-right: the left-right split crops about a quarter off each side, which is exactly where a reach across the counter goes.
Can I keep recording through the ten minutes something simmers?
You can, but there is no pause button to skip past it — a dual-camera recording runs continuously from start to stop. It is simpler to stop the take, let the pot do its thing off camera, and start a new take once there is something to film again.
Why does my face look dull or a different colour than the food?
The two cameras set exposure independently, so a warm stove light and ordinary room light on your face are two problems that do not automatically match, in both brightness and colour temperature.
