How to film a DIY craft video with both iPhone cameras
A craft video is a narrower shoot than most dual-camera content, in a good way. There is no room to walk, no changing background, usually no second person — just two hands working in roughly the same square foot of a table for the length of a project, while a small window shows the face explaining what is happening and why. That narrowness is exactly what dual-camera recording is good at: the hands and the reaction land in one file, with nothing to line up afterward.
It is also a close, static shoot, which raises different problems than a video where the camera or the subject moves around. The picture-in-picture window has to sit somewhere your own hand will not sweep across it, a single desk lamp usually lights the table far better than it lights your face, and when the whole point of a craft is a color — a paint mix, a matched thread, a dye — getting that color rendered honestly matters more than it does for most other kinds of video.
Put the small window where your working hand is not
Picture-in-picture is the natural layout here: the back camera fills the frame on the table, and the front camera sits small in a corner. What is specific to craft is that the hand doing the work sweeps across a fairly predictable half of that frame — a right-handed person working with scissors, a glue gun or a brush tends to move across the right side and the bottom of the shot, while the left side and the top stay comparatively clear. A window parked in the path of that hand gets covered by your own knuckles every few seconds; one parked opposite it usually does not.
DualCam’s picture-in-picture corner is not one of the settings a recording locks in — it can be dragged to any of the four corners while the camera is rolling, and the file follows the change immediately because the preview and the recording are the same rendered frame. That means the right corner for a project is worth testing for a few seconds at the start of a take rather than guessing: watch which corner your hand actually reaches during the first cut or the first dab of glue, and drag the window to the opposite one if it is in the way.
A desk lamp lights the table, not necessarily your face
The two cameras in a dual recording expose independently, each reading only what is in its own frame, and a typical craft setup gives them very different light to work with. A lamp angled down onto the table to light glue, paint or stitching well is, by design, not angled toward your face — the back camera reads a well-lit surface while the front camera reads whatever spill of light happens to reach you, which is often much less. That is a different problem from a kitchen counter or a garden bed, where the light source is usually large enough to cover both the task and the person doing it; a desk lamp is small and directional on purpose.
A second, softer light aimed roughly at your face — a ring light, a window, even a second lamp bounced off a wall — closes most of that gap without touching the light doing the actual work on the table. Where a second light is not practical, tapping the face in the small window sets exposure and focus there instead of on the table; DualCam ties both to whichever frame you tap, front or back, so it is a real trade rather than a fixed choice, and one worth making on purpose rather than living with whichever frame the app defaulted to.
Pick the lens and the color before your hands are busy
Craft work is close work, and the back lens picker — ultra wide, wide or telephoto, depending on the iPhone — is what controls how close the frame reads. Small materials, fine detail, or work happening only a few inches from the phone read better on ultra wide, the same physical lens the stock Camera app’s macro mode borrows automatically for single-camera recording; a multi-camera session does not make that switch for you, so choosing ultra wide by hand is how a dual recording gets a comparably close, wide shot. Which lens is active locks in the moment recording starts, the same as resolution, so this is a decision for before the glue comes out, not partway through.

Record the step, not the whole project
A dual-camera recording runs straight through from start to stop with no way to pause it, and a craft project rarely fits that shape anyway — cutting, gluing, painting and assembling are different shots with different framing and different drying or setup time between them, not one continuous scene. Stop the recording at each natural break rather than leaving it running through glue drying or paint curing; a normal video editor joins the resulting short clips together afterward exactly the way it would with any other footage, and nobody has to sit through five silent minutes of dry time in the finished video anyway.
It also keeps the file itself manageable.
