How to film a fishing video with both iPhone cameras
Fishing content has an unusual shape: long stretches where nothing much happens, broken by a short moment nobody wants to miss the framing on. Recording the front and back cameras at once suits that shape, because it puts what the line is doing and your face in the same file from the moment you start rolling — the bite, the fight, and your reaction to it end up in the same take instead of two separate clips shot from different angles that need lining up afterwards.

The wait is longer than the moment you are filming for

Rolling continuously through all of that pushes a take toward limits a five-minute clip never reaches: storage, at roughly 75 MB for every minute recorded; the phone’s thermal state, which two live camera pipelines and a real-time GPU composite drive harder than any single-camera recording does; and battery, which drains faster than normal video without usually being the first of the three to actually end a take.
None of these has one fixed number attached — which one you hit first depends on the phone, the weather and the resolution you picked — but on the water, heat is usually the one that gets there first, since there is rarely shade over open water and a phone already warmed by the sun starts the session closer to its limit. A cast rules out one of the two splits
If picture-in-picture is not the layout you want, the two ways to split the frame are not equally suited to fishing. A top-and-bottom split keeps the full width of both source frames, which matters here because a cast is a sideways motion — the rod swings out toward the edge of the frame, not up toward its middle.
A left-and-right split crops roughly a quarter off each side of both frames to fit a vertical canvas, and that missing quarter is exactly where a cast, a hooked fish pulling line off to one side, or a net swung in from off-camera tends to go. It works fine for a static shot where nothing moves sideways — a rod propped in a holder, say — but for anything with an actual cast in it, top-and-bottom or picture-in-picture keeps more of what you are trying to show.
Picture-in-picture also lets you swap which camera fills the frame at any point in the recording, which suits the shape of a fishing take specifically: the water or the rod tip leading through the wait, and a quick swap to face-led the moment there is something to react to, without needing to have decided which side mattered more before you started.
Zooming in on a bite you cannot walk closer to
Pinch-to-zoom works the same way it does in any camera app — a continuous gesture within whichever lens is currently selected — and it is often the only way to get closer to a line, a bobber, or a fish breaking the surface further out than you can physically move the phone. Within a lens’s own optical range this costs little; past that range, the image is being cropped and enlarged digitally rather than optically, and detail drops the further in you go.
That drop-off is more visible here than filming something close up, for the same reason it is anywhere in dual-camera recording: the frame you are zooming into is often smaller to begin with, whether that is a picture-in-picture inset or the cropped half of a split screen, so there is less native detail before the zoom starts throwing more of it away.
Switching to a different physical back lens — to a telephoto where your iPhone has one, for a genuinely distant subject — is a separate control from pinch-to-zoom rather than something that happens automatically as you zoom past a lens’s range, and it is a decision worth settling before you start rather than mid-bite: it is not one of the controls DualCam documents as changeable while a recording is running.
Wind off open water, and one microphone for the whole take
A dual-camera recording writes a single audio track from whatever iOS has set as the default input, covering both camera images at once, and open water rarely does that track any favours — there is usually nothing nearby to break up moving air before it reaches the microphone the way a building or a stand of trees would on land. Wind noise is a turbulence problem at the mic opening, not a loudness problem, so it does not get better if you talk louder or raise the volume afterwards.
Facing so the wind hits the back of the phone rather than the front helps, as does standing so your own body or the boat blocks the worst of it, and a wired microphone with even a basic foam windscreen is the most reliable fix available, since it becomes the default input the same way it would for any other reason to use one. If a spot is windy enough that you already expect the audio to be unusable, muting and narrating the catch afterward over a separate track is a legitimate plan — but mute has to be decided before you press record, because the audio track is created the moment recording starts, and nothing can add one back into a file partway through.
Mounting the phone somewhere a rod or a cooler lid will not muffle it
A tripod, a clamp on a rod holder, or a mount on the side of a boat all work with dual-camera recording the same way they work with anything else — they hold the phone still at one point, and because there is only one phone with a camera on each side of it, that one point fixes both frames at once until someone walks over and moves it. Test the actual composited preview from wherever you plan to sit or stand before locking anything down; it is the exact frame the file will contain.
Whatever clamps the phone should not close over its bottom edge, where the microphone sits — a grip that lands there can muffle audio in a way nothing in the live preview flags, unlike a lens getting partially covered, which shows up as a visible dark edge you can catch by checking the frame with whichever back lens you are shooting on. A multi-camera session also only gets a baseline image-stabilization mode rather than the stronger smoothing a single camera can call on, so footage from a rocking boat or an unsteady dock keeps more of that motion in it than a single-camera clip from the same spot would — worth expecting rather than being surprised by once you are reviewing the file.
