How to film a pet reaction video with both iPhone cameras

A pet’s reaction is one of the most honest things you can point a camera at, and also one of the hardest to get twice: the ears perking up at a leash, the stare-down with a cucumber, the dash to the door before you have even finished saying the word. Recording the front and back cameras at once gives a pet reaction the same thing it gives any other kind — your face and the reaction land in the same frame, at the same second, with nothing to sync afterwards — but a lens pointed down at an animal near the floor runs into different problems than one pointed at a box on a table.

The general mechanics of simultaneous recording are the same no matter what is in frame. What is specific to a pet is below: where the phone actually needs to sit, which layout holds up when the subject might not, why the microphone is not really listening to your pet, and why there is no such thing as filming the moment a second time.

Get the phone down to your pet’s height — which also moves your own face

A video of an animal reads differently depending on whether the camera looks down at it or sits roughly level with it. Level is almost always the better shot — it is the difference between a portrait of your dog and a photo of the top of your dog’s head. On a phone recording two cameras from the same body, getting the back camera down to that height, on a low stool, a stack of books, or the floor itself, moves the front camera down with it, because the two lenses are fixed to the same piece of glass and metal and cannot be positioned separately.

That means kneeling or sitting so your own face lines up with the phone at its new, lower height, rather than staying standing and looking down past it. Stay standing and the front camera mostly catches your chin and the underside of your face, usually lit from a ceiling light or window rather than from in front — the setup that turns a face into a silhouette instead of a subject.

Picture-in-picture holds up for a moment that stays put; split holds up for one that does not

A bowl of food set on the floor stays exactly where you put it, the same way a wrapped box on a table does, which is why a picture-in-picture inset framed once can carry a whole take of a calm reaction — sniffing a new toy, waiting for a treat. Point that same inset at a cat about to launch off a countertop, or a dog that spins in a circle before the zoomies start, and the inset is a fixed corner sitting in a frame that is about to move without it.

A top-and-bottom split keeps the full horizontal range of both cameras in the recording, so a pet that bolts sideways stays inside the frame instead of running straight into an inset that was never going to follow it. Save picture-in-picture for reactions you can predict will happen in roughly one spot, and switch to split — mid-recording works, since the file follows a layout change instantly — the moment you can tell the pet is about to move more than that.

Tap to expose for your pet, not for whatever is around it

The front and back cameras each set their own exposure from what they can individually see, and a pet near the floor is often sitting in different light than you are — a dark-furred dog low against a bright floor, a cat backlit by a window, a room where the only light is overhead and the animal is well below it. Tap the frame with your pet in it so that region drives its own exposure, instead of letting the lens default to whatever the rest of the scene suggests.

Do that before the reaction, not after. A dual-camera recording writes one composited frame per moment with no separate layer left over to re-expose later, so a pet that comes out dark or blown-out in an otherwise good take cannot be corrected back to what a properly exposed shot would have shown — only edited the way any finished video can be, which does not include recovering detail that was never captured.

One microphone, and it is closer to you than to your pet

Distance to that one microphone decides how clearly a sound comes through, and the microphone is on the phone in your hand or on its stand — usually closer to you, talking or narrating, than to a pet a few feet away.

That is why a quiet bark, a purr, or the click of claws on a hard floor can end up buried under your own voice even when your pet fills the main frame. If the sound of the reaction matters as much as the reaction itself, close the distance between the phone and your pet for that moment rather than staying still and expecting the framing to carry the audio the way it carries the picture.

There is no pause, and a pet will not do the moment again

A dual-camera recording runs as one continuous pass from the moment you press record to the moment you press stop, with no button that freezes it mid-take. That is a real limit for any kind of shoot, but it costs the most here: a pet has no idea a camera is rolling and will not reliably repeat a head-tilt, a tail-wag, or a full-speed lap of the living room because you missed it the first time. Coaxing it again usually looks exactly like what it is — a second attempt, not the real thing.

The practical fix is to start recording before the moment you are trying to catch — before you open the treat bag, pick up the leash, or walk through the door — and treat the unused seconds at the front of the file as the cost of not missing a reaction that was never going to happen on cue. If getting the pet ready takes a while, use that time between takes rather than during one: stop, get set up, and only start rolling once you are actually waiting for it to happen.

Common follow-up questions

Should my face or my pet be in the main frame?

Either works, and the main frame can be swapped between cameras while recording, with the file following immediately. Pet large and your face small tells a video about what your pet did; the reverse tells one about your own reaction to it. Pick a starting point and swap the moment it makes sense — you do not have to decide in advance.

What if I do not know exactly when my pet is going to react?

Start recording earlier than feels necessary. A dual-camera recording cannot be paused and resumed inside one file, so nothing before you press record gets captured. A few seconds of a pet doing nothing in particular costs far less than missing the reaction you were actually there for.

Why is my own voice louder than my pet in the recording?
