How to film a reaction video to a TV or monitor with both iPhone cameras

Reacting to something playing on a screen — a trailer, a match, a video someone sent you — is a different shoot than reacting to something physical in your hands. The back camera is pointed at a light source that redraws itself on its own schedule instead of a static object, the room is usually dimmed so the screen reads well, and the screen has its own soundtrack competing with your voice for the same microphone. None of that is specific to dual-camera recording, but it lands harder here, because the front camera is stuck sharing the same dim room and the same single audio track as the back camera.

Filming a screen can show a faint moving band — that is not the app

Point any camera at a TV, monitor or laptop and the picture can pick up a faint moving band or a flicker. It happens because the screen redraws itself on its own cycle while the camera reads its sensor on a different one, and the two rarely line up perfectly. This is a property of filming any screen with any camera, long before dual recording enters the picture — it tends to be worse on older or cheaper screens and less noticeable on modern high-refresh displays.

The fix is the one videographers have used for years: avoid framing dead square onto the screen with the edges cut close, and if the banding is bad, try angling the phone or the screen a few degrees rather than pointing straight at it — a small change is often enough to break the pattern. There is no toggle inside a camera app that removes it, because the mismatch happens between the screen and the sensor, before either camera’s software ever sees a frame.

A bright screen in a dark room pushes the two exposures apart

The back camera reads a bright, self-lit rectangle and exposes for it; the front camera reads a dark room lit mostly by that same screen’s glow bouncing around, and comes out dim or grainy next to it. Neither camera is doing anything wrong — they are simply looking at two very different amounts of light.

Tap the front-camera frame to bring exposure up on your face rather than trying to fix both sides in one move. Picture-in-picture keeps the screen’s edges intact

A screen carries content right up to its border — subtitles, a scoreboard, a chat overlay — which makes it a poor fit for the crop a split-screen layout applies. A left-right split trims roughly a quarter of the frame off each side to fit a vertical canvas, and that is exactly where the edges of a rectangular screen sit. Picture-in-picture with the back camera filling the frame keeps the whole screen intact instead, because a camera’s native frame and the vertical canvas share the same shape, and your own face rides in a small window rather than taking a slice of the screen with it.

Because the screen itself is a landscape rectangle inside a portrait-shaped capture, it will not fill your frame edge to edge the way a person or a room does. Expect some space above and below it unless you sit close enough, or switch to a wider back lens where your iPhone has one, to bring the screen’s own edges nearer to your frame’s edges.

One microphone, two sound sources

Dual camera recording writes a single audio track, taken from whatever the room actually sounds like, not a clean feed of your voice alone. In a screen reaction, that room includes the show’s own audio, and there is no way to pull the two apart afterwards — they are mixed into the same track the instant they are recorded, the same way the two camera images are mixed into the same frame.

The fix is a balance set before you press record, not after. Keep the screen’s volume a little lower than feels natural so your reaction sits on top of it rather than under it, and stay closer to the phone than the screen’s own speakers are, so your voice reaches the microphone with a real advantage. A source with heavy bass or rumble — a trailer, a game — tends to show up in the track more than a quiet dialogue scene would.

Common follow-up questions

Why does my screen have a faint moving band across it in the recording?

That is banding from the screen’s own refresh cycle not lining up with the camera’s, and it happens with any camera pointed at any screen — it is not specific to dual-camera recording. Angling the phone or the screen a few degrees off dead-on, or moving back slightly, usually reduces or removes it.

Should I use picture-in-picture or split screen for a screen reaction?

Why is my face so much darker than the screen in the recording?
