How to film a tarot or oracle card reading with both iPhone cameras

A tarot or oracle reading on camera wants two things at once: the spread on the table as cards are laid, flipped and read, and your face as you talk through what they mean. Recording the front and back cameras together puts both into the same file, so the pull and your reaction to it land in one take instead of a hands-only clip you have to record a voiceover for afterward.

The part that trips people up is the shape of the spread itself. A three-card row or a full Celtic cross is wider than it is tall, laid out flat on a table — and the canvas a dual-camera recording writes is the opposite shape, much taller than it is wide. Working out how to fit one into the other, before the cards are already laid out, saves a reshoot.

A wide spread does not fit a narrow vertical frame

DualCam’s canvas is 1080 pixels wide, with a height of either 1920 or 2340 — a tall, narrow rectangle either way. A spread laid out in a horizontal line across the table is a wide, short rectangle, the opposite proportions. Fit the whole line into that narrow frame and the cards end up small and centred, with table on either side that the reading does not need. The fix is in how the cards are laid out, not in the app: stack a spread into a column, or a compact cluster, rather than a single wide row, and it fills the height of the canvas instead of getting lost across the width of it.

Layout choice matters here too. A left-and-right split screen crops roughly a quarter of each source frame off its sides to fit a vertical canvas, which is the direction a spread needs most if it is laid out wide. A top-and-bottom split keeps the full width of whatever the back camera sees and only trims height, which is the safer choice for a spread you have not stacked into a narrower shape — it protects the cards on the edges instead of cutting into them.

Picture-in-picture, when the spread should be the whole shot

The other option is picture-in-picture, with the back camera filling the frame and your face floating in a corner. It is the layout to reach for when the spread itself is the thing that needs to read clearly — a Celtic cross with ten cards benefits from as much frame as it can get, and a small inset for your face costs it less width than a fifty-fifty split would. Pick the inset’s corner and size so it does not land on top of a card; a small window in whichever corner is already emptiest of cards costs the spread the least.

Which camera is the main one and which is the inset can be swapped mid-recording in DualCam, so there is no need to commit before you start. Let the cards fill the frame while the spread is being read, then swap so your face fills the shot for the interpretation once the cards are already laid and do not need to hold the whole canvas anymore.

Candlelight and lamp light are harder on a small phone sensor than they look

A phone lens is small, and a dim, moody reading is exactly the kind of scene that forces it to amplify a weak signal — real detail and grain get boosted together, and the cards can end up harder to make out than they looked to your own eyes at the table. This is not specific to a dual recording; it is what any phone camera does in low light. Two cameras sharing one hardware budget just means neither one has much headroom to spare when the room is already dark.

The torch only lights whatever the back lens is pointed at, so it helps the cards but does nothing for your face, and a single candle in frame rarely throws enough light to expose both anyway. A small lamp or a second candle angled across the table, out of frame but facing you, does more for legibility than the torch alone while keeping the room reading as dim as you want it to look. If the front camera is still the dimmer of the two once the cards are lit, picture-in-picture with your face as the small inset tends to hide noise better than a split screen giving it equal, full-sized billing.

Shuffling, pulling and holding a card long enough to actually read

A shuffle is quiet enough that it rarely fights the audio the way a blender or a grinder would in other kinds of process video — DualCam writes one audio track from whatever the phone’s microphone picks up, and a shuffle or the flip of a card sits comfortably under your voice rather than over it. What actually loses viewers is pace: a card set down and moved on from in a second is legible to you, sitting right over it, and often is not legible to someone watching it back at phone size.

Because the frame you see while recording is the exact frame written to the file, there is no separate close-up pass to add afterward if a card turns out too small or too far from the lens to read. Hold a card a little closer to the phone for a beat before setting it down, or angle the table so the spread sits nearer the lens than feels natural while you are looking at it in person — what looks like a reasonable distance to your own eyes is often too far for a camera compressing the whole table into a narrow vertical frame.

Common follow-up questions

Can I get a full flat overhead spread and my face in the same shot?

Not really. The front and back cameras face opposite directions on a fixed phone body, so tilting the phone flat enough to look straight down at a spread points the front camera at the ceiling rather than at you. A shallower angle, with the phone propped up and facing across the table, keeps both cameras useful at once.

Picture-in-picture or split screen for a card pull?

Picture-in-picture if the spread itself needs to read clearly — a large spread benefits from as much frame as it can get, with your face as a small corner inset. A top-and-bottom split if you want equal weight on the cards and your face; avoid a left-and-right split for a wide spread, since it crops the sides of the frame the cards are sitting in.

Why do the cards look grainy or dark by candlelight?

A small phone sensor has to amplify a weak signal in dim light, and that amplification is what shows up as grain — the same thing happens on a single-camera shot. The torch only lights what the back camera points at, so add a lamp or a second candle facing the table, out of frame, rather than relying on the torch or a single candle to expose both cameras.

A card was too small to read on camera — can I zoom in on it after recording?
