How to film a wedding ceremony with both iPhone cameras

Wedding getting-ready footage is relaxed and forgiving — if you miss a moment putting on the veil, there is usually another one a minute later. The ceremony itself is not like that. There is one processional, one exchange of vows, one kiss, and a small window to catch each of them from a seat you cannot move much once the room has filled in around you. Recording front and back at once is a good match for that pressure: the back camera holds the aisle or the altar, the front camera holds your own face watching it happen, and neither one costs you the other.

What makes a ceremony harder than most dual-camera shots is that almost every choice has to be made before it starts. There is no pause to think mid-vow, and once a frame is composited into the recorded file there is no separate layer left to go back and fix.

Treat the processional, the vows and the recessional as separate takes

A dual-camera recording runs as one continuous file from the moment you press record to the moment you press stop, with no way to pause partway through and pick back up later. Trying to hold a single recording open across the whole ceremony — the walk in, the readings, the vows, the rings, the kiss, the walk back out — means long stretches of a static altar sitting in the same file as the handful of seconds you actually wanted.

The ceremony itself gives you the cut points. Start a fresh recording as the doors open for the processional and stop once the couple reach the altar. Start again for the vows and rings. Start a third time as the kiss ends and the recessional begins. Three short, clearly labelled clips in the app's own library are easier to find later than one long file with the moments that matter buried somewhere in the middle.

The doorway is usually the brightest thing in the room; your pew rarely is

Most ceremony venues put the strongest light at the entrance the couple walks through — open doors flooding daylight in, or a bright foyer behind them — while the seating is lit far more ordinarily, if at all. An outdoor ceremony has the same problem in reverse: the couple can be walking straight toward the sun, and everyone facing them is squinting into it too. Each camera on the phone sets its own exposure from only what it can see, so a back camera pointed at a bright doorway and a front camera pointed at your own face in a dimmer row are solving two different lighting problems that happen to land in the same recorded frame.

Tap whichever frame needs the help before the doors open, not after you notice the couple has come through looking like a silhouette. Once the two images are composited into the file, there is no separate layer left behind to brighten one side back to how it should have looked.

Picture-in-picture for the walk in, split for the moment both faces matter equally

While the couple are entering, picture-in-picture is the natural layout — the back camera fills the frame with the aisle, and your own face sits in the small window, close enough to catch your first look at them. There is only one thing happening, and it deserves the full frame; your reaction is a smaller layer alongside it.

The kiss is a different kind of moment. It is one of the few points in a ceremony where a guest's own reaction — the exact second your face changes — is worth as much screen space as what is happening at the altar, rather than sitting in a corner window. Splitting the frame top and bottom gives both cameras equal height instead of making one of them dominant, which is the layout built for exactly that: a moment where both sides matter the same amount. Switching back to picture-in-picture for the recessional, with the back camera as the full frame again, keeps the couple easy to follow as they move quickly back down the aisle past your row.

One microphone hears the room, not the vows specifically

A dual-camera recording writes a single audio track from the phone's own microphone, not a dedicated line to whatever the officiant is saying. Unless the ceremony is amplified through a PA system loud enough to reach your seat clearly, what actually gets recorded from a few rows back is more likely to be the room's general sound — a sniffle nearby, a rustling programme, the person next to you shifting in their seat — with the vows themselves faint underneath it.

That is worth knowing before the ceremony starts rather than after, so it does not read as something going wrong. What a guest's recording is genuinely good for is the same thing it is good for anywhere else: pairing what was happening at the altar with how you looked watching it, in one file, rather than delivering audio quality that belongs to whoever is recording from the front row or holding the actual microphone.

A row of raised phones can block the shot you came for

This has nothing to do with the phone and everything to do with the room: modern ceremonies often have several guests holding a phone up at the same moment you are, and an aisle seat with a clear sightline is worth more than almost any setting on the phone itself. If you know in advance where the couple will stop — an altar, a chuppah, a spot marked on the grass — check what is between you and it before the processional starts, because that view is fixed for the whole ceremony once the room has filled in around you.

The back camera's lens choice is worth deciding at the same time, and for the same reason: it is not on the short list of settings a dual-camera recording lets you change once it is rolling, alongside layout, the picture-in-picture corner, its size and shape, and the filter, which all can. If your iPhone offers a telephoto lens on the back camera and your seat is far from the altar, choosing it before the doors open gives you more usable reach than digitally zooming in on the wide lens later and losing detail as you do.

The clips stay with you until you decide otherwise

A wedding ceremony recording is usually made for people who were not there as much as for yourself — the couple, and family who could not make the trip. Common follow-up questions

Should I record the whole ceremony in one long take or stop and start?

Stop and start. A dual-camera recording has no pause, so one continuous file across the whole ceremony spends storage and battery on long static stretches at the altar along with the handful of seconds you actually wanted. Separate short takes for the processional, the vows and the recessional are easier to find again afterwards, too.

Why does the couple look like a silhouette when they walk in, even though the room looks fine on camera?

The two cameras expose independently, and a bright doorway or an outdoor ceremony facing the sun will leave the couple looking dark against the light unless you tap the frame showing the aisle before they come through. That has to happen in advance — once the frame is recorded there is no separate layer left to brighten.

Will the recording actually pick up the vows clearly from my seat?

Not reliably, unless the ceremony is amplified close enough to reach you. The phone records a single audio track of whatever is nearest it, which from a few rows back is usually more of the room than the vows themselves.
