How to film a tutorial with both iPhone cameras at the same time

A tutorial has the same two-halves shape as a reaction or a vlog — the thing being shown and the person explaining it — but the thing being shown does not move on its own, usually sits closer to the lens than a face does, and is often lit by a completely different light. Recording both cameras at once puts your hands doing the work and your face explaining it into the same frame from the first second, with no separate demo clip and voiceover to line up afterwards.

Hands lead, your face narrates

A tutorial has a real hierarchy: the thing being demonstrated is what someone came to see, and your voice is there to explain it, not compete with it for space. That makes picture-in-picture the natural layout — the back camera fills the frame with your hands and the work, your face sits in a corner as the inset — the opposite of a two-person interview, where neither side outranks the other and a split makes more sense.

The roles do flip at the edges of a take: an intro where you look at the lens and explain what you are about to do, or an outro wrapping things up, reads better with your face leading. Frame for a range of motion, not a snapshot

A static demo shot still has to survive an entire take, and hands doing something real rarely stay inside a tight box — they reach, they turn an object over, they gesture while talking. Pick a distance and lens that leaves margin around where your hands actually work, not just where they are when you press record. Where your iPhone has one, the ultra wide lens on the back camera earns its place here: it keeps more of a close work surface in frame without forcing you to hold the phone uncomfortably far back.

Whichever lens you pick, decide before you start — DualCam’s lens picker is a separate control from pinch-to-zoom, and switching physical lenses on the back camera is not one of the things you can change mid-recording the way layout or filter are. Two different lighting jobs in one frame

Front and back cameras set exposure independently, each reading only the scene it sees, and a tutorial makes that especially visible because the two scenes are often lit on purpose in different ways: a lamp angled over a work surface for the demo, ordinary room light for your face. Neither camera knows about the other’s light, so a workspace lit brightly enough to show detail can leave your face reading dark by comparison, or the reverse.

Tap the frame that needs help — DualCam’s tap-to-focus carries exposure with it — rather than trying to fix both at once, since there is no shared correction across the two feeds. If the gap is wide enough that tapping cannot close it, a split layout gives both scenes equal visual weight and tends to read as two different light sources rather than one broken shot, which a small picture-in-picture inset sitting on a much brighter main frame exaggerates instead.

Keep detail without losing your voice

Small work — stitching, soldering, plating food, handwriting — depends on the viewer actually being able to see it, and that comes from capture resolution and lens choice more than anything you do afterwards. 1080p keeps more real detail than 720p, which matters most exactly where a tutorial needs it: a picture-in-picture inset or the cropped half of a split screen is already a smaller destination than the full frame, so it benefits the most from starting with a sharper source. Getting physically closer, or picking a wider lens, beats pinching to zoom for legibility — past a lens’s optical range, zoom is cropping and enlarging the image digitally, and fine detail is the first thing that goes.

A dual-camera recording writes one audio track for the whole take, and a workbench adds its own noise to that track: taps, scrapes, a knife on a board. Keep the phone off the surface you are actually working on if you can — knocks travel through whatever it is resting on straight into the microphone — and treat any tool noise as part of the take rather than something to fix afterwards, since there is no separating it from your voice once it is recorded.

Common follow-up questions

Should my hands or my face fill the main frame?

Your hands and the work, most of the time — picture-in-picture with the back camera leading and your face as the inset keeps the thing being demonstrated legible. Swap to a face-led frame for an intro or outro where you are talking straight to camera; DualCam lets that change happen live, mid-recording.

Can I zoom in on a small detail while I am recording?

Pinch-to-zoom works within whichever lens is currently active, but switching to a different physical lens on the back camera is a separate control, decided before you press record rather than mid-take. For legibility, getting physically closer or choosing a wider lens up front beats zooming in digitally once you are rolling.

Why does my face look dark while my hands look fine, or the other way around?

The two cameras set exposure independently, each reading only its own scene, so a lamp over your workspace and ordinary room light on your face are two separate exposure decisions that do not automatically agree.
