How to reduce echo in dual camera video on iPhone
A dual camera recording that sounds hollow, distant, or like it was shot in a stairwell almost always comes down to the room, not the phone or the app. Echo is reflected sound arriving at the microphone a fraction after the direct sound, and hard, bare, parallel surfaces — tile, glass, an empty bedroom with bare walls — produce more of it than soft, furnished ones. None of that changes because DualCam happens to be running two cameras at once instead of one; the audio side of a dual camera recording works exactly the way a single-camera recording does.

Why some rooms produce it and others do not
Echo, more precisely reverberation in a small space, is sound bouncing off hard surfaces and reaching the microphone slightly later than the direct sound, blurring speech into something that sounds distant or metallic. Bathrooms are the classic example — tile floor, tile walls, a glass shower door, all roughly parallel — but an empty bedroom with bare walls and a hardwood floor produces a milder version of the same thing, and a tiled kitchen or a stairwell is worse again.
Furnished rooms sound better for a simple reason: soft, irregular surfaces absorb and scatter sound instead of reflecting it cleanly back. A living room with a couch, a rug, curtains and bookshelves has far less hard, flat, parallel surface area than an empty room the same size, and it shows up immediately in a recording.
This is not a dual-camera problem
It is worth separating this from the constraints that are specific to recording two cameras at once. DualCam writes a single mono AAC track from the device’s default audio input — the same microphone and the same audio path a single-camera recording would use. Compositing two camera streams into one frame changes nothing about how sound reaches the microphone or gets encoded, so a room that sounds echoey in DualCam would sound exactly as echoey in the stock Camera app.
That also means there is nothing in the app to turn off. There is no audio setting beyond mute, and mute removes the track entirely rather than cleaning it up — it is not a processing toggle, so there is no “less echo” setting hiding in a menu.
What actually cuts it
- Get closer. Halving the distance between the phone and whoever is talking roughly doubles the ratio of direct sound to reflected sound reaching the microphone — the single most effective change available, and free.
- Add soft material between you and the nearest hard, flat surface. A blanket hung behind the phone, a rug on a bare floor, curtains over a window, even a closet full of clothes with the door open, all absorb reflections a bare wall would bounce straight back.
- Avoid corners and bare parallel walls. Recording toward the middle of a room, away from two facing hard walls, gives reflected sound more distance to lose energy before it reaches the microphone.
- Choose the room, if you can. A furnished bedroom or living room will consistently outperform a bathroom, tiled kitchen, stairwell or empty room for anything where the voice matters.
If you are already using an external microphone
DualCam records from whatever iOS has set as the default audio input, so a wired or Bluetooth microphone works if it has been selected as that input — the app does not override the choice. A microphone worn close to the mouth or clipped near the source helps with echo for the same reason moving the phone closer does: it raises the ratio of direct to reflected sound, this time without moving the phone at all. It will not eliminate a genuinely reflective room, but it is the single biggest lever available if the room itself cannot change.
Telling echo apart from wind or handling noise
Echo, wind and handling noise sound different and need different fixes, so it is worth being sure which one you are hearing before you rearrange a room. Handling noise is a low thump or scrape from touching the phone or the surface it sits on, usually solved by keeping a hand off the bottom edge, where the microphone sits, and not resting the phone on a surface anyone will bump. Echo, by contrast, is present even in the silence between words — a trailing, hollow quality on the speech itself — and it is a property of the room, not of anything touching the phone.

Does DualCam have a setting to reduce echo?
No. There is no audio processing between the microphone and the file beyond mute, which removes the audio track entirely rather than cleaning it up. Echo is fixed by changing the room or the microphone position, not a setting in the app.
Will recording in 720p instead of 1080p help with echo?
No. Resolution only affects the video streams from each camera; it has no bearing on the audio track or how sound behaves in a room.
Does a wired or Bluetooth microphone fix echo completely?
It helps, because it puts the microphone closer to the voice and improves the ratio of direct to reflected sound, but it does not remove reflections from a genuinely hard, bare room. Treating the room still matters.
Can echo be removed afterwards, in editing?
Not cleanly. Echo shares the same track and the same frequency range as the voice itself, so after-the-fact processing can only soften it, not separate it out. Getting the room and the distance right before recording is far more reliable than trying to fix it afterwards.
