Why does the front camera look more zoomed in than the back camera?
It usually is not zoomed in — it is a different lens. The front camera and every back-camera lens option are separate pieces of optics built into the phone, each with its own fixed field of view, and none of that is something a dual-camera app decides. Point both cameras at a same-sized object from the same distance and they will not frame it the same way, because they were never built to.
What a dual-camera recording changes is not the lenses — it is that you now see both fields of view in the same frame, at the same time, which makes a mismatch that was always there suddenly obvious instead of easy to ignore.
Two lenses, two fields of view, decided before recording starts
Every camera on an iPhone — the front camera, and each option on the back — is a separate physical lens with its own fixed field of view. That number is a property of the glass and the sensor behind it, not a setting. It is fixed the moment the phone was manufactured, and no app, dual-camera or otherwise, changes it.
This is true whether you are recording one camera or two. A video shot on the front camera alone has exactly the field of view it always has; you simply never had a second image sitting next to it to compare against.
Why compositing makes it obvious
A dual-camera recording draws both camera images into one frame at once, which is exactly the condition needed to notice a mismatch that single-camera use hides by default. Sit at arm’s length from the phone while the back camera points across the room, and the two frames were never going to show the same amount of the world — it is just that now they sit next to each other, or one sits inside the other, instead of taking turns filling your whole screen.
This is a different thing from layout cropping
Fitting a camera image into a split-screen half or a picture-in-picture inset crops the frame to make it fit a rectangle — that math is about shape, not about what the lens originally saw, and it is covered in the guide on picture-in-picture versus split screen. The field-of-view mismatch discussed here exists before any of that cropping happens; it is a property of the two source images, not of how DualCam lays them out.
The one real lever: which back lens you pick
The front camera does not offer a choice — an iPhone has exactly one front-facing camera, so there is nothing to switch there. The back camera does, on iPhones that carry more than one back lens: ultra wide, wide or telephoto, each with a meaningfully different field of view. A wider back lens fits more of the scene into the same frame at the same distance, which is the actual way to bring the two cameras’ framing closer together, rather than pinch-zooming or changing layout.
This has to be decided before you start recording. Like resolution, which back lens is active is not on the list of things DualCam lets you change mid-take; layout, inset placement, size, shape and filter are.
What does not fix it
Pinching to zoom does not change a lens’s field of view — it crops and enlarges the image the lens already captured, and detail drops the further in you go. That helps with framing within a lens; it does not make two different pieces of optics agree.
Switching layout does not touch it either. Picture-in-picture, split top-and-bottom and split left-and-right all decide how much of each already-captured frame survives being fit into its shape; none of them reach back and change what the lens originally saw.
Framing around it instead
Distance is the lever you actually have on the front camera, since there is no lens to swap there. Moving closer makes you fill more of your own frame; moving back does the opposite — the same relationship that governs any camera, just worth remembering because there is no picker to fall back on for that side.
Check the live preview with both people, or both subjects, already in position before you press record. Because the preview is the exact frame that gets recorded, what looks right there is what you get, and a few seconds of adjustment before recording beats a reshoot after.
Common follow-up questions
Is this something DualCam could fix in software?
No — it is not a compositing decision, it is a property of two different pieces of physical optics. Digitally scaling one image to match the other would mean throwing away real resolution to manufacture a match that is not really there.
Does switching the back camera to ultra wide make the framing match exactly?
It brings the two closer, not identical. An ultra wide lens fits more into the frame at a given distance, but it also carries the mild edge distortion ultra wide lenses are known for, so it is a trade rather than a perfect fix.
Can I change the back lens mid-recording once I notice the mismatch?
No. Lens choice is decided before recording starts, the same as resolution — layout, inset placement, size, shape and the colour filter are the controls that stay open while DualCam is recording.
