How to film a dance recital or school play with both iPhone cameras

A recital seat is a reaction shot, the same idea behind filming a concert or a tutorial someone else is watching: the stage in one part of the frame, your family’s face in the other, landing in a single file instead of two clips you would have to line up afterwards. What makes it a different shoot from a vlog or an interview is that you cannot talk, you usually cannot move, and you cannot ask for the routine again once it is over.

That combination — fixed distance, fixed seat, one irreplaceable take — means most of the decisions that matter happen before the lights go down, not during the three minutes your kid is actually on stage.

Picture-in-picture, not split screen

Split screen gives the stage and your seat equal weight, which is the right call for a conversation between two people who are both doing something. A recital is not that: one side is the performance, the other is a silent parent watching it, and giving both halves the same size just wastes half the canvas on a mostly still face. Picture-in-picture keeps the stage full-frame and tucks your reaction into a corner, which is both the more watchable result and the more forgiving one — a small window hides far more than a cropped half of the frame does.

It also sidesteps the split-screen crop. A vertical canvas is much narrower than the 16:9 a phone camera actually captures, so a left/right split has to cut roughly a quarter off each side to fit both feeds. On a stage shot from a fixed distance, that crop can be the difference between your kid staying in frame and drifting out of it during a routine you cannot ask them to redo.

Zoom is a decision you make before the curtain, not during it

Pinch-to-zoom works inside whichever back lens is active, the same as any camera app, but switching to a different physical lens — say from the main wide lens to a telephoto, on the iPhones that have one — is a separate control, not something recording adjusts to automatically. It is also not one of the controls that changes mid-take, so the lens has to be chosen before you press record, based on how far your seat actually is from the stage.

This matters more here than in most dual-camera shoots because a seat is fixed in a way a handheld shot is not. If a telephoto lens is available, starting on it gets you optically closer before you ever need to pinch in further. Past a lens’s own range, zoom is a digital crop of the sensor image rather than an optical one, and detail drops the further in you push it — a cost that shows up worse than usual here, because the stage is already the smaller of the two frames if you are running picture-in-picture with your own face as the inset, or half a cropped split canvas otherwise.

The stage and your seat rarely agree on exposure

The two cameras in a dual recording expose independently, each one reading only the scene directly in front of it. A stage lit for a performance and a dim house full of seated parents are about as different as two exposures get, and nothing shares a correction between the two feeds automatically — the frame you have not tapped is left to whatever its own camera judged correct on its own.

One microphone hears the whole row, not just the stage

A dual-camera recording uses one microphone on the phone, and it is picking up everything near it, not isolating the stage the way a lavalier on the performer would. A microphone’s sensitivity falls off sharply with distance — moving twice as far away roughly quarters how much sound energy actually reaches it — so from a seat several rows back, the loudest thing on the recording is often the row you are sitting in: a program being flipped through, a sibling asking a question, someone else’s phone camera shutter, not the performance itself.

Sitting as close as the venue allows helps the audio the same way it helps the picture, for the same reason: distance is doing most of the work in both cases. Beyond that, there is not much to fix mid-show — asking the people around you to stay quiet during the number you are filming is the more reliable lever than anything in the app.

What to settle before the show starts

Resolution, canvas and lens are locked-in or heavy to change

Resolution is fixed the moment recording starts, and switching the back lens is a heavier operation than the app supports mid-take — both need deciding before the first act, not adjusted between performers. Picture-in-picture’s corner, its size and shape, and the colour filter are all free to change while the camera is rolling, so those are the ones worth leaving for the moment rather than overplanning.

Stability from a seat is easier than it is standing

A recital seat is one of the few times a dual-camera shoot gets genuine stability for free: resting the phone against the seat back in front of you, on a knee, or on a small tripod if you have an aisle seat all remove the handheld shake that a vlog or a reaction video has to work around. Use it — a still frame is worth more here than in almost any other kind of shoot in this list, because you cannot recompose mid-routine the way you could reframe a conversation.

Put the phone in Do Not Disturb

iOS takes the camera away from a recording app when another app needs it — answering a call is the common case — and a program full of acts run long enough that a call arriving mid-performance is a real risk, not a hypothetical one. Do Not Disturb before the house lights go down costs nothing and removes the one interruption that is actually preventable.

Common follow-up questions

Should I use picture-in-picture or split screen for a recital?

Picture-in-picture. The stage is the subject and your reaction is secondary, so keeping the stage full-frame with your face in a small corner window makes better use of the canvas than splitting it evenly, and it avoids the crop a split screen has to make to fit both feeds side by side.

Can I switch to the telephoto lens partway through if my seat turns out to be too far?

Not mid-recording — which back lens is active is decided before you start, the same as resolution. Pick it based on your actual seat before the first act, rather than planning to adjust once the show is underway.

Why does my own face look dark in the recording even though the stage looks fine?

The two cameras expose independently, and DualCam ties exposure to whichever frame you tap.
