Why is one camera out of focus in dual camera video?
The usual cause has the same shape as the one behind a face that looks too dark: two cameras, two independent decisions, nothing coordinating them. Autofocus works per camera the same way autoexposure does — each lens reads only the scene in front of it and settles on whatever plane it judges sharp, with no awareness that another lens on the same phone is doing the same thing for a different scene.
That independence is not a flaw to route around. It is how a multi-camera session works, and once you know where the mismatch tends to come from — different depth of field between lenses, low light making one side hunt, or simply never having tapped the frame that needed it — fixing it takes one tap, not a setting buried in a menu.
Two lenses, two autofocus systems
Each stream in a dual recording comes from its own physical camera, and each one focuses independently of the other, the same way each one exposes independently of the other. Nothing shares a focus point across the two feeds by default — the back camera settles on whatever it judges the subject in its own frame, and the front camera does the same for its own frame, with no coordination between them.

How much of a scene looks sharp around the exact focus point — the depth of field — depends on the lens and the distance to the subject, not on the app. A wide shot across a room, especially on the ultra wide back lens where your iPhone has one, has a deep enough depth of field that a slightly imprecise focus point barely shows. A face close to the front camera, or a telephoto shot on the back, has a much thinner slice of the scene that actually reads as sharp, so the same small miss — or the subject leaning a few inches closer — is what makes one side look soft while the other does not.
This is one more reason lens choice matters beyond framing. A telephoto back lens compresses distance and reads as more separated from its background, which is often exactly what you want, but it also narrows the margin for error on focus. An ultra wide lens forgives more.
Low light gives autofocus less to work with
Autofocus finds its lock by reading contrast and detail in the scene, and a dim room simply hands it less of both to work with. A camera pointed at the darker half of a space can visibly search before it settles, or settle on a plane that is not quite right, while the camera in better light locks in almost instantly. This is the same underlying shortage of light that makes footage look grainy in low conditions — it is not a separate problem, just a different symptom of the same cause.
Give the darker side a beat before you start recording rather than cutting straight into a take. An autofocus system that is still searching in the first half-second of a shot is one of the more visible kinds of softness, and it is avoidable simply by waiting for it to settle.
What a tap locks in, and what stays live
Focus and exposure are not among the settings a DualCam recording locks at the start — that group is resolution, mute and the countdown timer, because those change how the output file itself is constructed. Tapping a frame to refocus is a live control, available before you press record and for the whole length of the take afterwards, the same way layout and filters are.
That matters most when a subject moves. If you, or whoever is on the front camera, lean in partway through a take, the focus point set at the start no longer matches the new distance, and the fix is the same tap you used at the beginning, not a setting you needed to have anticipated.
A short checklist
One more thing worth ruling out: a soft-looking picture-in-picture inset is not necessarily a focus problem at all. The inset is a smaller window sampled down from the source frame, so it can look less sharp than the main frame purely from that scaling, independent of what either camera focused on.
- Tap both frames once before you start, even the one that already looks fine — it costs nothing and removes a default guess.
- Retap a frame if its subject moves noticeably closer or farther mid-take; focus is not locked once recording starts.
- Expect a wide or ultra wide back shot to forgive more focus error than a close front shot or a telephoto back shot.
- In a dim room, wait a half-second after tapping before you start recording, so autofocus has time to settle instead of hunting on camera.
