Why is the front camera mirrored in dual camera video?

Because the front camera portion of the file is the same image you were looking at while you filmed it, and that live preview is mirrored — the same convention as a bathroom mirror, left and right swapped, that lets you actually aim your own face. Back camera footage is never mirrored, in DualCam or anywhere else, because there is no equivalent expectation for a camera pointed away from you.

This becomes a real question with dual-camera video specifically, because people who have used the stock Camera app for years have quietly learned the opposite habit for video: Apple’s Camera app mirrors a front-camera photo, but saves the video itself unmirrored. A dual recording does not have that split, and the reason is architectural, not a missed setting.

Where the mirrored view comes from in the first place

Every phone shows the front camera preview mirrored by default, because that is close to the only way a front camera view is usable for framing yourself. Picture an unmirrored front preview: move your hand right on screen and, in reality, it moved left. Nobody can aim a shot that way. Mirroring the preview turns the screen into the mirror you already know how to use, which is why it is close to universal across camera apps, not a DualCam-specific choice.

The back camera never gets this treatment, because there is nothing to correct for. You are not looking at yourself through it, so there is no mirror instinct to satisfy — the image you see matches the image anyone standing where you are would see.

Why the stock Camera app’s photo and video disagree with each other

This is where the confusion usually starts. Apple’s own Camera app has long saved a front-camera photo mirrored — matching the flipped view you framed it in — while saving a front-camera video the other way around, true to life, the opposite of what the viewfinder showed while you were recording it. Two outputs from the same camera, treated differently by design.

That inconsistency is easy to miss if you mostly check photos, and it is exactly the habit that makes a mirrored dual-camera video feel like a bug the first time you notice it. It is not a bug — DualCam is behaving consistently in a place where the stock app behaves inconsistently.

Why DualCam keeps the mirror instead of correcting it

A dual-camera recording does not have a separate “save” step that can quietly flip one half of the frame afterwards. The two camera images are composited into a single frame on the GPU while you shoot, and that composited frame — mirroring and all — is the one written to the file. There is no later stage where the front camera’s half could be flipped back without also re-rendering everything drawn around it, the same reason a picture-in-picture corner or a filter cannot be undone after recording.

So the mirroring you see in a dual-camera recording is not an oversight sitting next to a missing “un-mirror” toggle. It is a direct consequence of the viewfinder being the recording: whatever state the front feed was in when a frame was drawn is the state it stays in, permanently, in the finished file.

What this actually means when you are filming

Anything read left-to-right in the front camera’s portion of the frame comes out reversed — a shirt with text on it, a page held up to the camera, a watch or ring on the hand nearest the lens. None of this touches the back camera, since it was never mirrored to begin with, so a picture-in-picture inset of your face can carry reversed text while the main frame behind it reads perfectly normally.

Handedness reads reversed too. Raise your right hand inside a front-camera inset and it appears on the left side of that inset to a viewer, the same disorienting effect as any mirror. For most reaction and vlog shots this is invisible — a face does not have a “correct” reading direction — but it is worth a moment’s thought for anything where you are demonstrating a skill or holding up an object with visible text.

  • If a name tag, logo or piece of writing needs to read correctly, hold it up to the back camera instead of the front, or plan for it to appear reversed.
  • If you are demonstrating something with your hands to camera in the front-facing inset, know that left and right will not match what a viewer expects from watching you head-on.
  • None of this is fixable after recording, for the same reason nothing else about a composited frame is — decide it before you shoot.

Is the back camera ever mirrored?

No. Only the front camera has a mirror convention to begin with, because it is the only one framing you against yourself. The back camera in a DualCam recording matches what anyone standing next to you would have seen.

Is there a setting to un-mirror the front camera in DualCam?
